Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In III, 2510 Gondor was attacked in Rhovanion and by the Orcs. When the main army of Gondor was defeated and cut off it seemed that the final defeat for Gondor was near. That was when the Riders of the North came. What was the name of these Riders?

Answer: Eotheod

This can be found in the Appendix of "LotR". As a gift of gratitude, Cirion gave the Éothéod a place to live which they dubbed the Mark of the Riders. In Gonder this land was known as Rohan and the Éothéod became know as the Rohirrim, Horsemasters
2. Who was the father of Eorl the Young?

Answer: Leod

Felaróf was the horse of Eorl and first of the mearas. It had killed Leod, father of Eorl, when he tried to mount him. Eorl was able to break its spirit and mount it. He was the only person who was able to mount it from then and Felaróf understood every word Eorl said. Felaróf aged like men. Brego was the Son of Eorl and second king of the Mark. Baldor was the first son of Brego.

He never returned from the Paths of Death and Brego died of grief.
3. What was the name of Théoden's only child?

Answer: Théodred

Théodred was his only son and second Marshal of the Riders. He was killed at the Isen in the battle with Saruman. Théodwyn was the sister of Théoden and was married to Éomund, Upper Marshal of the Mark and she was mother to Éomer and Éowyn.
4. Who was the Captain of King Théoden's Guard?

Answer: Háma

Háma, Captain of the Guard, was killed in the Battle of Helmsdeep. Théoden had been very fond of him. Éomer was the Third Marshal and became Heir to Théoden on the Pelennor Fields. Elfhelm was the First Marshal of the Mark and Grimbold took command of an 'éored' in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, probably replacing the slain Théodred. Grimbold had fought together with Théodred at the Isen and Grimbold and Elfhelm later fought with the Orcs over the dead body of Théodred. Grimbold would later be slain in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
5. Who was Chief of the King's Knights on the Pelennor Fields?

Answer: Déorwine

Déorwine fell when the King and his few Knights were surprised by the Lord of the Nazgûl. His name is mentioned in the part where Riders stay behind to carry the king away in Chapter 6 'The Battle on the Pelennor Fiels' ("for seven of the king's knights had fallen there, and Déorwine their chief was among them."). Dernhelm was the disguise of Éowyn and actually was assigned to Elfhems éored, Guthláf was Théodens bannerbearer, who also fell when the horses went berserk in sight of the Nazgûl. Gúthwinë was the sword of Éomer.
6. Which King had the name 'Hammerhand'?

Answer: Helm

Helm was the last king of the first line and he and his sons perished in the Long Winter while they were being besieged in the Hornburg. The great valley was named 'Helmsdeep' after this Helm. Legend had that no man could kill Helm when he set out unarmed. He was found as a frozen icy statue on one day. Whenever Helm blew his mighty Horn, the enemies of the Mark shivered in fear.
7. Who was the Master of the Westfold during the War of the Ring?

Answer: Erkenbrand

Erkenbrand was both master of the Westfold and the Hornburg in Helmsdeep. He came to the king's aid with one thousand footmen when he was besieged in Helmsdeep by the Uruk-Hai. Without the aid of the Huorns it remains to be seen if the Rohirrim had been victorious though. Grimbold was also from the Westfold and would later lead an éored to the Mundburg (Minas Tirith) where he fell. Elfhelm was the Marshal of the Forces of Edoras and became Lieutenant to King Éomer after the War. Dúnhere was the nephew of Erkenbrand. Dúnhere fell before the Mundburg as well. Erkenbrand was a good friend of Elfhelm and Grimbold.
8. Who survived the Battle of the Pelennor Fields?

Answer: Elfhelm

Théoden fell after he had slain the Southron Chieftain. His horse was maddened by the Nazgûl and rolled over the king. The King died after talking to master Holdwine (Meriadoc/Merry) and Éomer, declaring him as his heir. Grimbold was mentioned in the song and Háma was killed in the Battle of Helmsdeep. Elfhelm survived the Battle became Marshal of the Eastmark under Éomer.
9. Which Rohirrim slew the Witchking of Angmar, the Lord of the Nazgûl?

Answer: Éowyn

Éowyn killed the Witchking after the blade of Holdwine, who is also known as Meriadoc the Hobbit, had wounded him. Dernhelm was her disguise, but she casted it away when she stood against the Witchking. Théoden was killed when he encountered the Nazgûl. With this, the prophecy of Glorfindel came true.

He had foretold that the Witchking of Angmar would not be slain by a man. The Witchking was wounded by a hobbit and killed by a woman.
10. The Rohirrim overthrew Saruman and conquered Isengard during the war of the Ring.

Answer: False

Treebeard, also known as Fangorn, and the Ents tore Isengard apart before the arrival of the Rohirrim. They could not harm Saruman in his tower, Orthanc, though. If the Ents hadn't destroyed Isengard, Rohan would have suffered even more losses before riding to the Pelennor Fields.
