Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this episode, Lisa comes down with which illness?

Answer: The mumps

Homer wakes up one morning and heads out to fetch the paper but he's halted by Santa's Little Helper who takes it upon himself to consider it playtime. Sure enough, the dog destroys the paper before advancing on Homer's breakfast, completely ignoring (and not understanding) Homer's orders to stay away. Homer ties the dog up outside to keep him out of the way.
Marge, meanwhile, wakes Lisa up for school but discovers that her cheeks are swollen and she has a fever. Marge believes it's the mumps and keeps her in for the day.
2. Is Marge able to take Lisa in to see the doctor?

Answer: Yes

Marge calls up Dr. Hibbert (via his home number, of course) and asks for a diagnosis and he books her in for an afternoon appointment. Lisa asks Bart to get her homework. As Bart boards the school bus, Santa's Little Helper breaks off his leash and decides to go on a bit of an adventure through town. Homer inevitably gets a phone call from Mrs. Winfield down the block complaining that the dog is in her pool. Homer makes a big fuss before discovering that she's actually correct.
3. What is the name of the type of shoe that Homer purchases?

Answer: Assassin

Walking the dog back home, Homer runs into Flanders (who decides to shower the dog in affection). Homer makes fun of Flanders' power-walking get-up until he looks down to see a brand new pair of shoes-- the Assassins. Flanders notes all of the particular features including vanity plates on the back, a water pump tongue, and velcro straps and, surprisingly, Homer is impressed. It did, however, cost a fair bit of money.
At Dr. Hibbert's office, Lisa gets confirmation that she does, in fact, have the mumps. As such, she has a week off school, something she's disappointed with.
4. Before Lisa, how many generations of Bouvier women worked on the family quilt?

Answer: Five

Lisa gives Homer a call at work and asks him to pick her up some copies of teen magazines. He has Lenny take over his post while he leaves work early.
Back at home, Lisa and Marge take a look at the Bouvier family quilt. Marge convinces Lisa that the memories of millions of drop stitches courses through her veins and she has her try her hand at threading a needle. When Lisa hurts herself, Marge just says she needs to develop a sewing callus. She then proceeds to burn her finger with a lighter to show her how tough it needs to be.
At the mall, Homer picks up Lisa's magazines but ends up taking a detour to pick up a pair of Assassins (for $125!).
5. What happens to Homer's new shoes?

Answer: They get torn to shreds

Homer brings home the magazines and the shoes and Bart lets it slip that he must've paid at least $125 for the pair. This obviously concerns Marge who worries about the family's finances in the wake of the purchase.
In the living room, while chewing the TV remote, Santa's Little Helper gets the compulsion to look into an open closet. Here, on the top shelf, he finds Homer's brand new Assassins and, grabbing a angling shoelace in his teeth, pulls them down. Homer finds his purchase in shreds downstairs.
The next day, Homer chains the dog up outside while Marge convinces the family to try an obedience school.
6. The obedience school that Marge selects is technically which of these?

Answer: A Canine College

Browsing through the yellow pages, Marge decides to give Emily Winthrop's Canine College a call simply because they seem the most prestigious and reputable in print.
Bart brings the dog to the 'college' and Emily Winthrop herself teaches the class the two words they'll allegedly come to appreciate: 'choke chain'. The introductory class is more for the owners; she tells them that love and affection won't help them. Instead, harsh punishment for wrongdoings, like they would give a child, is necessary to ensure that the dogs do what they're told.
7. Which of these products purchased by Homer does Santa's Little Helper eat?

Answer: Cookie

Lisa and Marge stay home and work on the quilt while watching soap operas. At the same time, Santa's Little Helper chases Snowball II around the house before stealing a sucker out of Lisa's hand. Both show their concern for the dog and worry of what may happen if obedience school doesn't stick.
At Emily Winthrop's, many of the dogs show promise; Santa's Little Helper, however, doesn't seem to be making any progress.
Homer, meanwhile, attempts to return his damaged shoes but realizes they're beyond hope. On the way out of the mall he ends up an expensive macadamia nut cookie. He brings it home, puts it in a jar, and leaves a note. Sure enough, Santa's Little Helper strikes again.
8. Lisa's quilt patch depicts which of the following themes?

Answer: Music

Lisa is thrilled to show her quilt path to her mother; it depicts the two greatest musical influences on her life thus far-- her music teacher, Mr. Largo and her friend, Bleeding Gums Murphy. It also shows her saxophone. When Marge sees the callus on her daughter's finger, they share a moment. When the two leave the room, however, the dog comes out to play.
They return with Homer to find the quilt in shreds. Six generations are gone from Marge like that. Homer tries to console Marge and, for a time, succeeds...at least until he discovers that his cookie was eaten.
A family meeting is held and Homer discusses the possibility of giving the dog away, much to the kids' fears.
9. Who sides with Homer and believes that the family should get rid of Santa's Little Helper?

Answer: Marge

Bart, Lisa, and Maggie all try to side with the dog; Lisa says that despite the bad things he does, she still looks into his vacant, brown eyes and can't bear to see him go. Marge, however, sides with Homer. He's a nice dog but he doesn't obey and he isn't housebroken; the obedience school isn't working. Bart asks if they can keep him provided he succeeds at obedience school and both parents agree to this. Bart puts extra effort into the training but finds that it isn't going anywhere.

At the same time Homer ends up putting an early ad in the paper to get rid of the dog and gets an alleged client. Bart's worries come to a head when Santa's Little Helper is unable to resist eating a baited beef wellington at the 'college'.
10. What command does Santa's Little Helper finally understand in the end of the episode?

Answer: Sit

Lisa moves on from the destruction of the quilt by starting the patch on a new one (commemorating the moment the dog destroyed the last one). Meanwhile, as judgement day nears, Bart asks Mrs. Winthrop if she can simply let the dog pass her course. She refuses and makes him pull the choke chain when he doesn't sit for him. During their last night, Bart spends the entire evening trying to get through to Santa's Little Helper. Lisa tells Bart to spend their last hours enjoying their time together.

They do. As Bart starts to cry, he says that he wishes that he would just "sit". Surprisingly, the dog understands; he sits down. Then he lays down, shakes hands, stays, speaks, and rolls over. At graduation the next day, Ms. Winthrop is shocked and awards the diploma. Even Homer is unable to contain his excitement.

They keep the dog.
