To fill the time after their television breaks (oh the horror!) Marge and Homer recount the time they first met in high school...in detention of all places. While Homer was the eternal slacker, Marge took on feminism in the 1960s and needed to pay the price despite being an A-student. Homer cleverly tried to ask her to prom by squeezing French lessons out of her and posing the question to her before Artie Ziff could jump in. When he revealed his plan, however, things backfired. Things obviously worked out though-- Marge and Homer ended up together in the end. When Homer and Marge had their first encounter, Homer heard the tune of The Carpenters' "(They Long to Be) Close to You". "Why do birds suddenly appear..."

Mayor Quimby dedicates the sign early on in the episode, informing the townspeople that the banner will inform them all if anything good or bad is occurring within the Springfield Nuclear Plant in regards to their safety. As they demonstrate the different messages, the people in the crowd get more and more worried but Homer and the other workers simply laugh. If there were a core explosion, there would be no way to power the sign. Unfortunately, Mr. Burns hasn't arrived for the dedication.

Marge drives Bart and Lisa out to a comic book convention and, to Bart's surprise, Lisa is interested in getting there early before all of the good comics are gone, particularly since she really only reads "Casper the Friendly Ghost". When they compare comic covers they notice a striking resemblance between Casper and Richie Rich; when they wonder how Richie died, Lisa hypothesizes that he took his own life upon realizing the hollowness of the pursuit of money. Marge asks the kids to lighten up.

Homer and Marge prepare for a party at their house. Homer, trying to sneak some hors d'oeuvres, gets swatted away by Marge who asks him to be on his best behavior for the first party they've ever held for their friends and neighbours. The kids, meanwhile, are told to make their way to bed since it'll be too late and there are no kids coming. When the doorbell rings, sure enough, no one seems to be ready. Nonetheless they invite their guests in and Ned takes to the drinks table to show off his skills in mixology. He makes Homer a drink with several shots of hard alcohol (Flanders Punch) and it isn't long before he's slurring his speech. Marge warns him to take it easy.

In class, Lisa reads a book while her classmates gossip over Mrs. Hoover, their teacher, who is allegedly having some problems; Janey says that she drank a bottle of drain cleaner and another kid says she fell down a well. When Mrs. Hoover comes in she informs the students that she has been diagnosed with Lyme Disease and will not be able to teach. Until a substitute is called in, Principal Skinner will oversee the class. Upstairs, Bart is showing his class a video of Snowball II being born. This doesn't go over well considering the graphical content of the movie.

While watching TV, Bart and Lisa are exposed to the last day of Krusty the Clown's big, week-long event at Mt. Splashmore. Krusty really promotes the venue (in particular its two hours of free parking, nose plug rentals, and on-premises trauma center site) and encourages viewers via song that they all need to go to Mt. Splashmore immediately. Bart and Lisa recognize that the promotion is shameless, but it works. They spend all day and night repeatedly harassing Homer until, finally, he says yes, just so that they'll stop.

Homer wakes up one morning and heads out to fetch the paper but he's halted by Santa's Little Helper who takes it upon himself to consider it playtime. Sure enough, the dog destroys the paper before advancing on Homer's breakfast, completely ignoring (and not understanding) Homer's orders to stay away. Homer ties the dog up outside to keep him out of the way. Marge, meanwhile, wakes Lisa up for school but discovers that her cheeks are swollen and she has a fever. Marge believes it's the mumps and keeps her in for the day.

At the movie theater in Springfield, Grandpa Simpson and Jasper demand refunds for their viewing of McBain, a movie they felt very negatively about, and for their opinion of the theater which, as is usually the case with theaters, was quite disgusting. When the employee says that they don't allow refunds and that he shouldn't have a heart attack over it, Grandpa does, in fact, begin to have a heart attack. The rest of the Simpsons, meanwhile, say a blessing before dinner. While the kids argue, Marge picks up the phone in the kitchen-- it's the hospital.

Homer is awakened at 8:00am to the phone ringing. When he picks up the line, it's Barney calling from his place. He just wanted to call about a brand new barbecue joint that's opened up in Springfield, Greasy Joe's Bottemless Bar-B-Q Pit. The amazing part? It's all you can eat! Homer heads downstairs to ask Marge about the possibility of going on Saturday night and she decides to call her sisters to look after the kids. She does, however, show a bit of worry as Homer said he'd limit his pork servings to six per week.

The episode begins with a glimpse into 1220 B.C. when Moses descends from Mt. Sinai with the Ten Commandments and tells his people how they should be living. This, of course, puts several people out of their jobs including a past version of Homer who spends his days thieving. In the present day, Homer rests in the hammock out back and wakes up to find Flanders arguing with the cable guy. Homer is surprised by Flanders' attitude and discovers that the cable guy tried to offer him illegal, free cable for only $50. Homer decides to chase the man down; within the day he's stealing cable.

Bart and Lisa sit directly in front of the TV at the start of this episode and Homer tells them to back up a bit so that they can all watch 'Yakkin' at the Movies', a show featuring clips from the new movie starring Rainier Wolfcastle, "McBain". The movie, as one would expect, is a high-octane action-thriller with many, many explosions. While they watch critics argue about the film, the signal on the TV starts to cut out. Homer is called upon to fix it (by hitting it) but the problem gets worse until finally the signal dies. Marge finds it sick that they're still trying to make out shapes onscreen.

Marge cooks the family dinner in the kitchen while Homer stares into the microwave, waiting for the meatloaf to cook faster. Marge assures him that dinner is imminent and calls the kids to the kitchen for their meal while it's unbelievably hot. Lisa is disappointed-- it's Thursday, yet again, and it means it's meatloaf night. She claims they need to be open-minded and try new things and Marge agrees. They decide to go out the next night though Homer is disappointed that they're missing their weekly pork chop night. Lisa says they should go anywhere that doesn't sell burgers, pizza, or fried chicken. Sarcastically, Homer suggests Mars.

For the first and only time in the run of the show, the episode featured the opening sequence and was followed by the credits playing in front of Bart's escapades through Springfield. This was then followed by the title, 'Episode 23: "Bart Gets Hit By A Car"'. It would be the only episode to do this (in hundreds) and, ironically, it would give a bit of the plot away. The episode begins with Bart riding his skateboard around the town, through some wet cement and over occupied manholes. Generally, he acts as a menace. This, of course, comes to a head.

The episode begins with Marge cooking dinner, pork chops, in the kitchen while Homer comes in to compliment her on her cooking. As she adds a number of otherwise obscure spices, Homer vows to build her a spice rack as he has a number of tools he never uses in the garage. In the other room, the kids watch an episode of 'The Itchy & Scratchy Show' on 'Krusty the Clown' entitled 'Hold that Feline' where Itchy lights a football bomb and hits Scratchy on the head with it.

As this episode opens, Bart and his friends (and Lisa) watch wrestling at home. This match as Springfield's Center for the Performing Arts is a big one, and two European juggernauts battle in the ring for the glory. At Moe's Tavern, Homer and the guys are watching the same thing (with more enthusiasm). Unsurprisingly, both Bart and Homer act the same way when not around each other. As the fight ends in a surely illegal upset (one wrestler bashes the others head with a wrench to win), both sets of viewers throw food at their TV screens and boo.

The episode opens with Homer mowing the lawn with a motorless push mower. Fed up with the job, he tells Marge that it should be Bart's chore since he's worked hard enough for the week. Marge notes that Bart would be doing it, but he has a science project to work on. Upstairs, Bart sits at his desk reading a comic book. Every once in a while, he checks on his experiment, a single potato, and continues to note that the his potato is, in fact, still a potato. Next door, Flanders starts chatting over the fence with a clearly irate Homer. When Marge notes that they're all out of beer, Flanders invites Homer into his 'rumpus room' for a beer, straight from the keg), and Homer is shocked to find that Flanders' basement is actually quite nice.

The episode opens with Homer at Moe's and Moe asking Homer what happened to Capitol City. Homer states that he simply doesn't want to talk about it because he doesn't want to be 'that guy who sits in a bar telling the story about how he became a loser'. It doesn't take much longer before he gives in and tells the story anyways. It begins with Homer and the family going to 'Nuclear Plant Employee, Spouse, and No More Than Three Children Day' at the Springfield Stadium. The family is excited to go, but Homer is most excited of all because he feels that his ticket entitles him to drink as much as he possibly can.

This episode opens with Bart and Lisa fishing on the shores of a river. A man stops his car and walks down tot he shore to greet them. After he says he's an investigative reporter on the road looking for a new scoop, Bart reels in a big fish. When he pulls it above the water, the three discover that the fish has been horrible mutated; it has three eyes. The reporter looks downstream and sees the looming Nuclear Power Plant in the distance and features it as an article in the Springfield Shopper. As a result, Governor Bailey calls for an investigation of the plant and its safety. Marge claims this is a great idea but Homer states that if he were Governor, he'd focus on more important issues like splitting up President's Day into two separate paid holidays.

As noted by the title of the episode, the 'Treehouse of Horror' is a collection of short Halloween-themed vignettes with all sorts of spooky stuff. After this first episode in the series, the treehouse faded from the picture. The episode opens with Marge warning the audience about the episode's content. Homer, dressed as a ghost, returns home from a night of trick-or-treating to find the kids still awake in the treehouse in the backyard. Lisa tells the urban legend about the babysitter with a murderer in the house and Bart says that it isn't scary; he heard it in the third grade. Lisa challenges him to tell a funnier one and he takes the stage to tell "Bad Dream House".

During the commercials of an episode of "Grade School Challenge", the family views an advertisement for Dimoxinil and Homer s delighted by the so-called miracle breakthrough formula being pushed. On the advertisement, the speaker says that with Dimoxinil, he can grow as little or as much hair as he wants. Of course, to get the free brochures, Homer needs to send five dollars to Hair City, Utah and the Dimoxinil Headquarters. Homer heads upstairs and tosses out his ineffective hair growth products and the following day he heads to the Springfield Mall's Hair Clinic to pick up his six months-supply of Dimoxinil (with which he gets a free t-shirt). When he realizes how much it is though, he is forced to leave it behind.

The episode opens with Ms. Krabappel's class doing book reports and she tells Bart to cease his interruptions during Martin's report. Martin goes above and beyond, speaking at a grade level that is higher than the rest of the students and effectively wowing Ms. Krabappel with his impersonation of his respective author, Ernest Hemingway. The teacher tells the class there's enough time to have one more report and she calls upon Bart who decides to make up his report on the spot, opting to make up everything by looking at the cover of his novel, "Treasure Island", even going so far as to mention the publisher as opposed to facts from the book. After the report, Ms. Krabappel is less than impressed, and after Bart denies a question/answer period, she asks him who the pirate was in the novel. Bart lists off pirates in his head but tells her it was Bluebeard. She forces him to stay after class and write lines on the chalkboard.

After going to see Lance Murdock perform at a stunt show, Bart decides to emulate his new hero by performing increasingly death-defying stunts for his friends. This culminates in Bart announcing that he will be jumping over the great chasm of Springfield Gorge by riding down a hill on his skateboard and flying over. Homer manages to convince him not to do it, but in an effort to prevent his son from making the leap he accidentally performs it himself...at least partway across. He ends up plummeting to the bottom, twice, and ending up in a hospital bed next to Lance Murdock.
