Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Teams flew to London in Leg 1, grabbing their first clue from what landmark destination, pictured here?

Answer: Trafalgar Square

After getting the call to start the race from their homes, eleven teams embarked on a new race around the world that they never could have known would be marred by an international pandemic. To start their stop-start trip, they flew to London and collected their first clues from men dressed as red telephone booths in Trafalgar Square.

Their route would take them to Buckingham Palace and Soho before they checked in at their first Pit Stop in the lobby of the Natural History Museum.
2. Underneath London in Leg 2, racers took this railway system designed to transport which of these?

Answer: Mail

The Mail Rail, found in an underground tunnel system beneath London's Postal Museum, was the site of the race's first Road Block in Leg 2 when racers headed through daytime London. Team members embarking on the task here rode the train through the tunnels and searched the mail bins waiting for them for their next clue.

The rest of the leg brought teams to Leicester Square, a Detour pushing them to the pub or the bakery, and to a double-decker bus where they checked into their second Pit Stop.
3. At the University of Glasgow, nine teams were told that production of "The Amazing Race 33" would be suspended due to COVID-19. How long was it before teams would return for the remaining legs?

Answer: Nineteen months

After a long leg through the city of Glasgow, Scotland, an unprecedented event in the history of the race occurred. Due to the unexpected circumstances surrounding the outbreak of COVID-19, production for the race was halted before teams could head out on Leg 4 (which was slated to take teams to Sweden).

It would be nineteen months before teams would reunite, elsewhere in the world, to recommence the race, and even then, only five teams still competing would be able to resume. As a result, the two eliminated teams would rejoin the group to round out the roster.
4. Teams first destination upon returning to the race in Leg 4 was Säntis, where they completed a Road Block. What country were they in?

Answer: Switzerland

After nineteen months of uncertainty, the race picked back up with seven teams (five still in the roster and two who had been eliminated) in St. Gallen, Switzerland where they were told to head to the top of Säntis to begin their fourth leg. What followed what a series of tasks through the idyllic Swiss Alps, it's small villages, and its cultural touchpoints as teams re-exercised their race muscles. Though Michael and Moe were brought back to the race, having been eliminated in Leg 1, they fell to the back of the pack again and were eliminated checking into the fourth Pit Stop in Altstätten.
5. Teams travelling throughout Lugano, Switzerland in Leg 5 had the chance to work with all but which of these items?

Answer: Ice Cream

After a bungee jump in Central Switzerland in Leg 5, teams proceeded southward to the Italian border and Lugano, a picturesque lakeside Swiss city. The Detour allowed teams to make sausage or make a physically-demanding delivery of chestnuts and wine, and it was clear that despite the beauty of this hilly vacation spot, teams were hard-pressed to complete either task.

The six competing teams checked in at the Pit Stop at Parco Ciani to find it would be a non-elimination leg.
6. On the island of Corsica, teams located Belvédère de Corteto find a Detour clue and which of these?

Answer: A metal canister

The six competing teams were flown to Corsica in Leg 6, taking themselves through the mountain villages deep in the heart of the Mediterranean island. There, teams collected a canister of goat's milk from Belvédère de Corte before heading off on a cheese-themed Detour.

After canyoning for the Road Block and paddling up the Tavignano in kayaks, teams checked in at the Pit Stop at a local campsite. Only five teams continued on as Akbar and Sheri were eliminated.
7. Along the coast of Corsica in Leg 7, teams completed a Detour task on the waters of Pinarello Beach. Before this, however, they had to eat what local dish?

Answer: Casu martzu

What teams discovered when they reached the Tour de Fautea was that casu martzu, the cheese they were required to indulge in, is known for containing live maggots. Once they stomached this gut-churning delicacy they could continue along the Corsican coast, completing Detours and Road Blocks en route to a Pit Stop awaiting them on the cliffs overlooking the southern tip of Corsica in the city of Bonifacio.

This was a non-elimination leg, meaning all five remaining teams were able to continue on in Leg 8.
8. Teams travelled to Greece in Legs 8 and 9, spending two sunny legs of the race on the coast of what body of water?

Answer: Aegean Sea

Both legs here took five teams (and subsequently four teams) through Northern Greece, starting them off in Thermaikos and having them race around the countryside and the seaside enjoying food and other cultural touchpoints of the nation. In Leg 8, teams had to make and eat food and learn about Greek Orthodox saints while in Leg 9, teams had a lengthy race around the city of Thessaloniki, the second-largest city in Greece. Lulu and Lala managed a complex situation in Leg 8, arriving at the Pit Stop having missed several tasks.

In an effort to catch up, they dropped to last and were sent packing. Leg 9 was non-elimination.
9. From Fortaleza de São Filipe, teams needed to find a flag on the waterfront. They did so in what country?

Answer: Portugal

The penultimate leg of the race involved the final four teams flying to the nation of Portugal where, after being dropped off just outside of Lisbon, teams drove to the coastal town of Setúbal. Running up and down on foot and even paddling around the harbour in a rowboat, the racers eventually headed onward to the European coast to check in at their final Pit Stop in Cabo Espichel.

The result was three teams heading to the final leg and one team, Arun and Natalia, missing their shot at the million.
10. The final leg of the race commenced atop the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.

Answer: True

The final three teams-- Kim and Penn, Raquel and Cayla, and Ryan and Dusty-- all opened their clues at the exact same time atop this distinctive Downtown Los Angeles building and proceeded on a race in and around the City of Los Angeles en route to the finish line where Kim and Penn became the official winners of "The Amazing Race 33", claiming the million dollar prize after nearly twenty months of stop-start racing beginning in early 2020 and ending in late 2021.

It was the fourth time the race ended in Los Angeles in thirty-three seasons.
