Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The suburb of Coolangatta, found in what coastal city, acted as the first destination visited by teams in Leg 2?

Answer: Gold Coast

Though teams started the race in Far North Queensland's Mossman region, the second leg flew them to the larger city of the Gold Coast. The twelve teams racing here were given the opportunity to become lifeguards at North Kirra SLSC before reaching the first Road Block of the race (and there would be many!).

The teams ultimately checked in at the Pit Stop at Wet'n'Wild Gold Coast where Jaskirat and Anurag would win their first (and only) First Class Pass, letting them sit out for a leg and giving them the power to bestow the Salvage Pass and the Sabotage Pass on the bottom two teams.
2. Teams stuck close to the Great Barrier Reef in Leg 6 (on Fitzroy Island) but which was the only team to complete the 'Restoration' Detour challenge there?

Answer: Sefa and Jessica

While teams spent the first half of Leg 6 travelling, their efforts were rewarded the closer they got to Cairns when they headed to Fitzroy Island for a series of tasks. For their Detour, teams could choose either 'Rehabilitation' or 'Restoration', both of which involved efforts in and around the Great Barrier Reef.

While nearly all teams completed 'Rehabilitation', which involved cleaning the tanks of of local sea turtles, Sefa and Jessica completed 'Restoration', which needed teams to descend into the reef in a Scuba-Doo to count coral.

This was the first season of any "Amazing Race" to take competitors to the Great Barrier Reef altogether.
3. Between Legs 9 and 10 (and 10 and 11), teams traveled between destinations on which of these?

Answer: The Ghan

Though teams spent most of the race (thus far) in Queensland and the Northern Territory, a trip to Alice Springs, deeper into the Outback, in Leg 9 allowed teams the opportunity to make their way due south on the Ghan, and that's exactly what the teams did for the next two legs, using the passenger train as their Pit Stops for a handful of periods as they made their way from Alice Springs to Coober Pedy and then onward to Adelaide.

A trip on the Ghan was also used as a prize in Leg 15 (it was won by MJ and Chelsea).
4. The Sleaford-Wanna Sand Dunes in Lincoln National Park were the site of a Leg 12 task in which some racers had to use which of these?

Answer: Blindfolds

Reaching the halfway point of the race by the end of this leg, eight teams raced through South Australia's coastline to stay in the competition. The leg took them to Sleaford-Wanna Sand Dunes where one member, blindfolded, needed to walk backwards, guided only by their teammate on a walkie-talkie, to plant flags into marked spots on the dunes.

After this, they could run to the nearby Pit Stop overlooking Boston Bay. At the end of this leg, Jordan and Violeta were eliminated.
5. This site, found in Townsville, was visited once in Leg 4 and again in Leg 13. What was completed on both visits?

Answer: Road Block

In both cases, team members needed to rappel down the face of Castle Hill, once at night (during Leg 4) and again during the early morning (in Leg 13). Both visits to Townsville were pretty short with teams heading onward to Palm Island after their first visit and then heading to Ingham and Forrest Beach at the end of Leg 13.

This marks the first time in nearly any "Amazing Race" where teams visited the same destination more than once to complete the same task over again (though rarely teams would visit the same city as a start and finish destination).
6. Eight teams visited the Glass House Mountains during the race.

Answer: True

Leg 14 took place throughout the Sunshine Coast region where teams were split up, put together again, and redivided as they searched the Glass House Mountains and braved a fearsome storm on the way to the fourteenth Pit Stop of the race. In addition to facing an Intersection and a lengthy hike through the mountains, teams enjoyed the wares of local artisans and got dirty on the farm to boot.

At this point in the race, only eight teams remained.
7. Leg 15 ended atop the Story Bridge, found in what major Australian city?

Answer: Brisbane

Leg 15 sent the final eight teams riding in style into Brisbane's city center where they completed a handful of difficult tasks including a dance-centric Detour, a food guessing game at a local Subway restaurant, and a physically-demanding task at the Ibis Styles Hotel.

The leg ended atop the uppermost point of the Story Bridge resting on the Brisbane River. It was here that MJ and Chelsea won their third leg of the race since entering the competition, where Chris and Aleisha overcame a tough Sabotage to place second, and where Stan and Wayne checked in in last place for a third consecutive leg.

This time they were eliminated.
8. This city, the largest in Tasmania, served as the centrepiece of Leg 16 of the race and was also the start of Leg 18. Where is it?

Answer: Hobart

Teams had another race first in Leg 16 when they flew from Brisbane to the island of Tasmania. There, the remaining seven teams battled it out to stay in the race across three legs on the island, the first of which took teams around Hobart, the second sending them west to Southwest National Park, and the third directing them north to the wineries and mountains there.

While Holly and Dolor were eliminated in Leg 16, MJ and Chelsea were sent home at the end of the Tasmania trip in Leg 18.
9. The Three Sisters acted as the backdrop for which component of the race's twentieth leg?

Answer: Pit Start

After ending Leg 19 in the Hunter Valley, teams were brought to Echo Point Lookout in Blue Mountains National Park to begin their twentieth leg. The Three Sisters, a trio of sandstone ridges, marked the start of what would be a high-stakes and high-adrenaline leg as the five remaining teams traversed the mountains, learned difficult choreography, served meals, and shot puddings on their way to the Pit Stop.

In this leg, Skye-Blue and Jake were eliminated after twenty consecutive legs of racing, a record only beaten by Chris and Aleisha (who ran twenty-two).
10. Which team crossed the finish line atop Mount Kosciuszko in first place?

Answer: Brendon and Jackson

It took more than seven weeks of racing through twenty-four legs in nearly every Australian state (including many never seen before on any "Amazing Race" season around the world)-- not to mention DURING the COVID-19 pandemic-- but the final three teams raced from Sydney to Canberra in Leg 24 and then onward to the final tasks in Thredbo before they checked in on the last mat at the summit of Australia's highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko.

There, Brendan and Jackson stepped on the mat first to win the $250,000 prize and the title as winners of "The Amazing Race Australia 5".

They were followed by Ashleigh and Amanda in second and Jaskirat and Anurag in third.
