Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How old is Admiral Leonard McCoy when he appears in "Encounter at Farpoint"?

Answer: 137

Humans of the 24th Century have much longer lifespans than contemporary humans, though McCoy appears fairly decrepit as he walks through the corridors of the Enterprise-D with Lt. Commander Data. This would be DeForest Kelley's final television appearance before his death in 1999.
2. Who is the Enterprise's Chief Engineer in "The Naked Now"?

Answer: MacDougal

Season one was notorious for having what seemed like a new chief engineer in every episode! Logan, Argyle and Lynch were chief engineers in later first-season episodes. Geordi La Forge would, of course, go on to assume the job for good at the beginning of season two. Chief Engineer Sarah MacDougal was blocked out of engineering by an intoxicated Wesley Crusher during polywater intoxication crisis in "The Naked Now."
3. Which human martial art does Lt. Tasha Yar demonstrate in the holodeck for the Ligonian delegation in "Code of Honor"?

Answer: Aikido

The Ligonian leader Lutan is very impressed by Yar's physical prowess and eventually goes on to kidnap her. Aikido is a Japanese form that stresses the importance of nonresistance in deflecting the strength of one's opponent. Kung Fu, Capoeira and Krav Maga are Chinese, Brazilian and Israeli martial art forms, respectively.
4. Which of the following Enterprise crew members was NOT a part of the away team to Gamma Tauri IV in "The Last Outpost"?

Answer: Troi

This is the first episode to feature the insatiably greedy Ferengi. The Portal of the long-dead Tkon Empire agrees to release the Enterprise and its Ferengi counterpart after Commander Riker convinces the Portal that his intentions are peaceful. The Portal is particularly taken with the wisdom of Chinese philosopher Sun Tzu.
5. Discounting trips to parallel universes or periods of time before the formation of the cosmos, "Where No One Has Gone Before" features the furthest journey outside the Milky Way Galaxy we have seen in the five live-action "Star Trek" series.

Answer: True

Due to an engineering experiment gone awry, the Enterprise is catapulted first into the M-33 galaxy and finally to a point that Data describes as the edge of the known universe, a realm where thought and reality are seemingly indistinguishable. The mysterious alien known only as the Traveler is revealed to be the source of the Enterprise's monumental jumps.

He later returns in "Remember Me" and "Journey's End." The reference to "moments in time before the formation of the cosmos" refers to the Voyager's journey to the moments preceding the Big Bang in "Death Wish" ("VOY").
6. Identify the order in which the entity from the Beta Renner cloud occupies its living hosts in "Lonely Among Us."

Answer: Worf, Crusher, Picard

Picard and the entity, merged as one, eventually beam off the ship back into the cloud. Unfortunately, the merging proves impossible, and Picard's energy pattern returns to the Enterprise where it is reintegrated with his physical pattern from the transporter. Engineer Singh is accidentally killed by the entity.
7. In which later episode does the graphic used to depict the Edo "god" from "Justice" appear?

Answer: Conundrum

In "Conundrum," the memories of the Enterprise crew are temporarily blocked by a Satarran impostor named MacDuff (Worf initially believes that he commands the Enterprise). He nearly misleads them into destroying a space station operated by the Lysians.

In "Justice," Wesley unknowingly violates one of the laws of the Edo and is sentenced to death. The Edo "god" entity intends to see the sentence enforced until Picard makes an impassioned plea in the name of justice.
8. The USS Stargazer, Captain Picard's former command, was thought lost after a battle in which star system?

Answer: Maxia Zeta

Unbeknownst to Picard at the time of the so-called Battle of Maxia Zeta, the enemy ship was Ferengi--and commanded by Daimon Bok's son. In "The Battle," Bok seeks revenge on Picard by forcing his to re-live the battle by exposing the Captain to a mind-control device. Bok would later return in the seventh- season episode "Bloodlines."
9. In "Hide and Q," the nefarious Q returns to embroil the crew of the Enterprise in a deadly game and make Commander Riker the offer of a lifetime. Which famous Shakespearean play is referenced by both Picard and Q in this episode?

Answer: Hamlet

In defiance of Q's bleak view of humanity, Captain Picard eloquently invokes the famous monologue from Act II of "Hamlet," as spoken by the title character. Picard's love of Shakespeare is revisited frequently throughout the series. Patrick Stewart, the actor portraying Picard, is a Shakspearean-trained.
10. The infamous Betazoid marriage ceremony is first seen in the episode "Haven."

Answer: False

Lwaxana Troi is introduced in this episode, where she compels her daughter to go through with an arranged marriage made in Deanna's childhood. The marriage is ultimately cancelled when Wyatt Miller, Counselor Troi's betrothed, decides to leaves with the Tarellians to help cure the Tarellian Plague. We finally get to see (part of) the Betazoid marriage ceremony in the fifth-season episode "Cost of Living," and it is mentioned in the movie "Star Trek: Nemesis."
11. The Jarada, as featured in "The Big Goodbye," are what kind of species?

Answer: Insectoid

Unfortunately, we never get a glimpse of the Jarada's appearance. Perhaps they're related to the Xindi-Insectoids featured in "Star Trek: Enterprise's" third season? The main plot of this "Next Generation" episode, however, focuses on a malfunctioning holodeck program in which Captain Picard plays fictional 1940's detective Dixon Hill.

The Dixon Hill program returns in episodes "Manhunt" and "Clues," as well as the movie "Star Trek: First Contact."
12. After incapacitating Data and assuming his identity, Lore attacks which of the following crewmembers first in "Datalore"?

Answer: Worf

Lore knocks out Worf in the turbolift and proceeds to the cargo bay where he attempts to compromise the Enterprise on behalf of the Crystalline Entity. Data and Wesley are ultimately successful in stopping Lore, who is fated to drift in space until eventually being rescued by Pakleds (as revealed in "Brothers").
13. What metal does the away team search for on Angel One in an attempt to locate the survivors of the Odin?

Answer: Platinum

The Enterprise encounters the female-dominated society of Angel One, in an episode of the same name. As platinum was not a naturally occurring element on the planet but would likely have been brought by the survivors of the Federation freighter Odin, Data reasoned that searching for the metal would lead the away team to the Odin survivors. Note that astatine is not actually a metal!
14. "What's a knockout like you doing in a computer-generated gin joint like this?" On whom does Commander Riker use this memorable pick-up line in "11001001"?

Answer: Minuet

The Bynars create the Minuet character on the holodeck in order to distract Commander Riker while they secretly commandeer the Enterprise. Minuet would return in the fourth-season episode "Future Imperfect" as Riker's late "wife." Minuet was played by Carolyn McCormick, perhaps best known for playing Dr. Elizabeth Olivet on "Law & Order."
15. In order to convince Karnas, the governor of Mordan IV, of his true identity, what does the youthfully transformed Admiral Jameson show the governor in "Too Short a Season"?

Answer: A scar on Jameson's wrist

While Jameson's wife Ann beams down to Mordan IV and shows Karnas a visual log of her husband's startling transformation, the governor is only convinced of Jameson's identity after the admiral shows Karnas a V-shaped blood scar on his wrist from 45 years earlier when Karnas and Jameson negotiated their original deal. Apparently, William Shatner was originally sought to reprise his role of James T. Kirk for this episode.

As Shatner was either unwilling or unable to appear, the character of Admiral Mark Jameson was introduced.
