Answer: Funeral

The episode opens with Granddad's funeral.

In reality, Lennard Pearce, who played Granddad, had died not long after suffering a heart attack. He had already begun filming the episode "Hole in One" when he passed away. John Sullivan added the funeral episode as a tribute.

Buster Merryfield was brought in as a replacement, playing Granddad's estranged brother, Albert. Uncle Albert would later feature in the "Hole in One" episode in place of Granddad.

Answer: Hat

Granddad was known for wearing a trilby. When Del spots an identical looking one on the front of a car at the church, he believes it to be Granddad's, and poignantly returns to the graveside to drop the hat in with the coffin.

The vicar then exits the church and asks if anyone has seen his hat.

Of the regular characters, as well as Del and Rodney, we also see Mike, Boycie and Trigger. This episode is also the first to feature Uncle Albert, who is currently living with Del and Rodney's cousin Stan and his wife Jean in North London.

Trigger often comes into possession of items that may have been obtained illegally, such as briefcases in the series one episode "Big Brother", or paint in the series two episode "The Yellow Peril".

Pub landlord Mike tells Boycie that someone stole the cigarette machine. Later on, during the wake back at the flat, Trigger offers Rodney some cigarettes and produces several packets, telling Rodney he had loads, thus suggesting Trigger is responsible for the theft.

In fact, Stan works in the insurance business, and is "doing very nicely."

Stan and Jean do not appear overly thrilled to be hosting Albert, even suggesting they had considered a retirement home for him. When Albert gets left behind after the wake, Del gives him a lift back home, only to discover that Stan and Jean have taken the opportunity to leave.

Granddad was notorious for his bad cooking, invariably burning food. Del makes some sausage and mash for him and Rodney, but Rodney is unable to eat it because "it tastes nice".

Albert spent his working life in the navy, both Royal and merchant. In a running joke throughout the rest of his time in the show, despite his claims that he never talks about his time in the Navy, he has a story for almost every situation, which usually begin with the words "During the war..."

It becomes clear from these stories that Albert is something of a jinx, as many of his stories involve his ships being sunk.

Del and Rodney are in The Nag's Head when Albert comes in. He tells Rodney that the Seaman's Mission has been demolished to make way for luxury flats and a marina. Realising that Albert has nowhere to go, Rodney offers him what little money he has in his pocket, but Albert turns it down. It turns out Del had already given him some money earlier that morning.

As well as claiming the Seaman's Mission is no longer there, Albert also affects a fake cough to garner some sympathy. Del does not initially fall for the ruse, but as he and Rodney are leaving The Nag's Head, Del has a change of heart. He invites Albert to stay with them.

As they are heading out the door, Mike calls Albert back to tell him the mission called and they have a bed for him, but Albert hushes Mike.
