Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Way We Was", Marge and Homer had their first encounter with each other in high school. What song did Homer hear as she entered the room?

Answer: "(They Long to Be) Close to You" by The Carpenters

To fill the time after their television breaks (oh the horror!) Marge and Homer recount the time they first met in high school...in detention of all places. While Homer was the eternal slacker, Marge took on feminism in the 1960s and needed to pay the price despite being an A-student. Homer cleverly tried to ask her to prom by squeezing French lessons out of her and posing the question to her before Artie Ziff could jump in. When he revealed his plan, however, things backfired. Things obviously worked out though-- Marge and Homer ended up together in the end.

When Homer and Marge had their first encounter, Homer heard the tune of The Carpenters' "(They Long to Be) Close to You".

"Why do birds suddenly appear..."
2. In "Bart the Daredevil", Bart memorably decides to jump Springfield Gorge on his skateboard. Who ends up making the leap instead?

Answer: Homer

After going to see Lance Murdock perform at a stunt show, Bart decides to emulate his new hero by performing increasingly death-defying stunts for his friends. This culminates in Bart announcing that he will be jumping over the great chasm of Springfield Gorge by riding down a hill on his skateboard and flying over. Homer manages to convince him not to do it, but in an effort to prevent his son from making the leap he accidentally performs it himself...at least partway across.

He ends up plummeting to the bottom, twice, and ending up in a hospital bed next to Lance Murdock.
3. In "Bart Gets an F", Bart will repeat the fourth grade unless he gets a passing grade in what course?

Answer: History

In this episode, the second season premiere of the show, Bart has to make up for past failures at school by getting through his final exam and graduating the fourth grade. Although he puts this off more than once, he ends up getting tutored by Martin and has to miss a freak snow day to succeed and, in the end of the episode, he does demonstrate enough knowledge not on the test, but by unassumingly spouting out an obscure history fact in front of Mrs. Krabappel.

This episode was the highest-rated episode of "The Simpsons" ever aired.
4. In "Three Men and a Comic Book", Bart, Milhouse, and Martin split three-ways to purchase a comic book featuring which hero?

Answer: Radioactive Man

In this episode, Bart, spurred by the urge to purchase the rare first issue of "Radioactive Man", sets out on part-time jobs to earn money. When his venture proves fruitless he, Milhouse, and Martin end up joining forces to buy the comic from the Android's Dungeon only to be at odds when they need to divvy the purchase among them. What follows is paranoia-- the boys spend the night in Bart's treehouse, need to work out a schedule for holding onto the comic, and ultimately lose it to their own greed and fickleness. Radioactive Man, of course, reappears in later episodes.
5. To combat violence in cartoons, Marge creates an organization known by what acronym in "Itchy & Scratchy & Marge"?

Answer: S.N.U.H.

In this episode, an impressionable Maggie ends up causing bodily harm to Homer after mimicking the violent cat and mouse duo, Itchy and Scratchy, on television. To stop children everywhere from becoming negatively affected by cartoons, Marge heads out on a crusade, creating "Springfieldians for Nonviolence, Understanding, and Helping" (S.N.U.H.) to combat the issue.

She does ultimately succeed but realizes that things have gone too far when her own organization starts lashing out against the arts as a whole. Ultimately, things revert back to normal.
6. In "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?", Homer discovers that he has a half-brother named Herb who earned most of his money in what industry?

Answer: Auto manufacturing

After speaking to his father, Homer discovers that somewhere out there (Detroit, specifically), he has a half-brother. The two end up reconnecting when Homer brings the family to Herb's mansion and, in a weird twist, Homer is asked to create a car that appeals to consumers like himself to put the company back on the map. Ultimately, the car, dubbed 'The Homer', is a huge flop, mainly due to Homer's outlandish ideas (including seating bubbles) which subsequently put Herb out of business.
7. Homer becomes the mascot for what Springfield sports team in "Dancin' Homer"?

Answer: Springfield Isotopes

In this episode, Homer recounts the tale of how he became a mascot for the Springfield baseball team, the Isotopes, by standing in front of the crowd and motivating them to their feet, ultimately giving the team the luck they needed to win their games.

After his major success with the team and the town's sports fans he was traded onward to become a new mascot for the Capital City Capitals and, after one night, he and his family were forced to return to their hometown.
8. Who dates Principal Skinner in the episode "Principal Charming"?

Answer: Patty Bouvier

Marge tasks Homer with finding a suitable date for her sister Selma in this episode and things seem to fall into place when Bart gets in trouble at school. He's prompted to invite Principal Skinner over for dinner and when he finally arrives he inadvertently falls for Patty, almost marrying her in the same episode.

Unfortunately, she decides to turn down his offer, realizing that she can't leave her sister single. Although Skinner spends most of the episode letting Bart get away with vandalism, things go back to normal by the end of the episode.
9. During the episode "Brush With Greatness", Marge reveals her teenage crush for which famous musician?

Answer: Ringo Starr

After an embarrassing weight-related incident at the Mt. Splashmore water park, Homer finds his old weight equipment in the attic and stumbles upon Marge's old artwork, all of which depicts Ringo Starr. When Lisa admires her mother's paintings, she recommends taking a class at the local community college, which she does.

While Homer gets fit, Marge ends up winning art contests and gets noticed by Mr. Burns who, after expending everyone else in the Springfield art community, commissions her to paint his portrait for the new wing of the Springfield Art Gallery. Let's just say that Burns bares it all.
10. During the first annual "Treehouse of Horror" episode, the kids share in a retelling of what famous Edgar Allan Poe poem?

Answer: The Raven

In this first trio of horror tales, the family inherits a haunted house in "Bad Dream House", meets with space aliens Kang and Kodos in "Hungry are the Damned", and retells Poe's "The Raven". All three of the vignettes of this episode are told by Bart and Lisa who, after trick-or-treating, head to the treehouse for some spooky tales. Homer, who overhears the stories, ends up more scared by the end than the kids. "Treehouse of Horror" has since become an annual staple for the show.
