Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What "How I Met Your Mother" cast member played the Toymaker?

Answer: Neil Patrick Harris

Neil Patrick Harris uses all of his Broadway skills to make "The Giggle" a camp adventure. His Toymaker is both hilarious and terrifying, sometimes at the same time.

The total connection of humanity to the information grid creates mass psychosis as everyone thinks they are right all of the time despite facts saying otherwise. Sadly this seems to the definition for being an American in the 21st century.

As the Doctor points out, the human race excels at arrogance and stupidity. The fault is not in our stars, but in ourselves.

Neil played Barney Stinson on "How I Met Your Mother". Jason Segal was Marshall, Josh Radnor was Ted (the I of the title) and Taran Killam was Gary Blauman; he married Cobie Smulders (Robin).

Neil Patrick Harris has been acting since he was a child. He gained fame playing teenage doctor on "Doogie Howser" (1989-93).
2. What inventor appears in "The Giggle" (2023)?

Answer: John Logie Baird

John Logie Baird, the Scotsman who invented television, is in the cold open. It shows the moment in October 1925 when he created the first clear television image.

Baird had first displayed the idea of television in March 1925, but it took him roughly a year to create the first true television display in January 1926.

Philo Farnsworth was important in the development of electronic television. The Thirteenth Doctor met Tesla.
3. What was the name of the puppet the Toymaker gave to Baird's assistant?

Answer: Stooky Bill

Stooky Bill was a real doll that Baird used for his early television experiments. The doll could stand up to the ultra bright lights, although it did melt and catch on fire as we saw in "The Giggle". Baird could paint Bill and create enough contrast to capture an image.

The Doctor explained that through the Toymaker's magic, the image of Stooky Bill had been burned into every screen since 1925, and his laugh had been driving people crazy for the last century.

Donna was the one who figured out the laugh. It was an Arpeggio of CEGCGEC.
4. What former companion of the Doctor is working at UNIT in "The Giggle"?

Answer: Melanie Bush

Melanie, who we last saw in "Dragonfire" (1987), is now working at UNIT.

Melanie was a companion of the Sixth and Seventh Doctors. She ran off with Sabalom Glitz to see the universe. Mel was the first companion to have red hair.

Bonnie Langford has been acting since she was six. Most of her work has been in television, although she has been on stage in the West End. Langford is also a talented dancer, including dancing on skates.
5. In the card game between the Doctor and the Toymaker, what was the winning card?

Answer: King of Hearts

The Doctor drew an eight of Clubs, and the Toymaker beat him with a King of Spades.

Since the Doctor beat the Toymaker the first time -- way back in 1966 -- the Doctor is invokes the rule of "best two out of three."

"The Celestial Toymaker" (1966) pitted the First Doctor, Steven, and Dodo against the immortal Toymaker. They managed to defeat him in a series of games.
6. What did the Toymaker turn the bullets into?

Answer: Flowers

The Toymaker turned bullets into rose petals. The Doctor argued that the Toymaker could use such abilities for good. The Doctor offered the Toymaker the out of traveling the universe with him on the TARDIS.

Like all good "Doctor Who" villains, the Toymaker turned him down and the Doctor was forced to fight him.
7. What game did the two doctors challenge the Toymaker to?

Answer: Catch

The oldest game, catch. Fourteen and Fifteen toss the ball back and forth until the Toymaker drops it off the helipad at UNIT.

The Fourteenth Doctor became 14 and 15 when the Toymaker shot him with the galvanic beam. After a little pushing and pulling, voila, two doctors.
8. When the Doctor bigenerated, which one was wearing pants?

Answer: Fourteen (David Tennant)

In a twist on regeneration, the galvanic beam caused the Doctor to split in two when he regenerated.

Fourteen wound up wearing the pants. Probably best, as David Tennant is twenty years older than Ncuti Gatwa.

Ncuti Gatwa was born in Rwanda. His family fled the genocide in 1994 and settled in Scotland. Gatwa rose to prominence as one of the stars of "Sex Education" (2019-23). He won a BAFTA Scotland award for Best Actor in Television in 2020.
9. Where did the Doctor and Donna travel to in "The Giggle" (2023)?

Answer: London 1925

They traveled to Soho, London in October 1925. They found the store of the Toymaker, who led them through a maze before confronting the Doctor with his past.

He noted the fates of Amy Pond (weeping Angels), Clara Oswald (killed by a raven) and Bill Potts (killed by the Cybermen) -- making the Doctor quote defensive.
10. Who directed "The Giggle" (2023)?

Answer: Chanya Button

Chanya Button has been working in British television since 2019. A graduate of Oxford, she won several film festival awards for her 2015 film "Burn Burn Burn." She was nominated for a Hugo Award, the most prestigious award in science fiction, for "The Giggle" (2023).

Brian Hayles created the Celestial Toymaker. He was a writer with the BBC in the 1960s and 1970s and wrote several episodes of "Doctor Who."

Lachele Carl returns as news reader Trinity Wells. This was her tenth appearance on "Doctor Who."

Ruth Madeley was Shirley Bingham, UNIT's 56th science advisor. We first saw her in "The Star Beast" (2023). Madeley first worked with Russell Davies on his science fiction series "Years and Years" (2019).
