Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the cargo the Cybermen were after on the space train?

Answer: A young girl

"Power of the Doctor" opens with the Doctor, Yaz, and Dan jumping onto a space train to rescue a girl being kidnapped by Cybermen.

The girl turns out to be an energy being that the Master is using to power a massive energy conversion planet.

The Master uses the conversion planet to switch bodies with the Doctor. Later, the Doctor uses the conversion planet to turn volcanoes into public art.

After a pep talk by the Doctor, the energy being destroys the conversion planet and escapes. Unfortunately, the Master uses the beam to zap the Doctor, a final (???? - with the Master who knows) act of revenge.
2. What two former companions show up as agents for UNIT in "Power of the Doctor" (2022)?

Answer: Tegan and Ace

Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Ace (Sophie Alfred) return after 41 and 33 years, respectively.

Tegan is in Romania, while Ace is exploring art galleries. It turns out the Master is behind both schemes they are investigating.

There are plenty of Easter eggs. Ace has her jacket and baseball bat, and she talks with the Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy). Ace calls Thirteen "professor."

Tegan says a "building full of Cybermen is nothing compared to being an air hostess in the 1980s." Tegan talks with the Fifth Doctor (Peter Davison) who used "braveheart" and mentioned Adric.
3. The Master shows up in Russia in 1916. What historic figure is he posing as?

Answer: Rasputin

It is the Mad Monk, one of history's all-time bad boys, Grigori Rasputin. The Master first shows up in Siberia and then is in Saint Petersburg.

The Master uses his hypnotic abilities on Nicholas II. By mid-1916, the Czar was already starting to have problems, some related to elites opposed to Rasputin.

You know, if Rasputin was the Master, it would explain why he was so difficult to kill.
4. Who crash lands on the conversion planet?

Answer: Vinder

Vinder, our intrepid pilot from the "Flux" series crashlands on the conversion planet the Master created. Why he was so close to Earth is uncertain.

He does call the Doctor for help.

Jacob Anderson played Vinder, who helped defeat the Flux in series 13. In "Power" he works with the Fugitive Doctor to trap the Master.
5. Where is the Master when he is arrested by UNIT?

Answer: Naples

Since the Master had been defacing artworks all over Europe, Florence seems likely.

But the Doctor and UNIT caught up with the Master (Sacha Dhawan) in Naples at a seismology conference.

The arrest is actually a ruse by the Master, who breaks out of UNIT with the help of Cyber Masters.

Sacha Dhawan made his first appearance as the Master during "Spyfall" (2020). The Master has been a regular nemesis of the Doctor since 1971.
6. Whar type of scientists have gone missing?

Answer: Seismologists

The Master has used his tissue compressor on a dozen of the world's leading seismologists. This lays the groundwork for the Daleks to weaponize the world's volcanoes.

The tissue compressor is a frequent weapon of the Master. He used it to kill Tegan's aunt, something he taunts her about at UNIT. He also used the tissue compressor to create a nesting doll Cyberman to invade UNIT headquarters.
7. Where do the Daleks have their South American base of operations in "The Power of the Doctor" (2022)?

Answer: Bolivia

The Daleks are in a volcano in Bolivia. Their plan is to force volcanoes around the world to erupt simultaneously. This would cause widespread destruction and most likely lead to drastic global cooling.

Bolivia is landlocked between Peru and Argentina. It has two capitals, La Paz and Sucre. Parinacota is the largest recently active volcano in Bolivia. Many of the mountains on the Andean border with Chile are former volcanoes.
8. While David Bradley appears as the First Doctor, who is the first living former Doctor we see?

Answer: Colin Baker (Six)

Colin Baker was first, followed by Davison, McGann, and McCoy.

It was a reunion for the actors from "The Five(ish) Doctors Rebooted" (2013), Peter Davison's spoof about the 50th anniversary show.

Colin Baker was the Doctor from 1984 to 1986. He was known for his flamboyant costume and his cat pin.

Pete Davison interacts with Tegan and Sylvester McCoy interacts with Ace later on in the episode.

While McCann has done quite a few audiobooks, this marks his first true return to the show. He did a very brief appearance in 2013 to mark the regeneration of Eight into the War Doctor.
9. What "friend of the Doctor" does Ace discover in the volcano?

Answer: Graham

Graham, who accompanied the Doctor during series 11 and 12, meets Ace. He claims to be Arnold Palmerson, volcano expert.

Ace identifies him as "a friend of the Doctor" who is afraid of the Daleks. Graham complains he cannot get the hang of psychic paper.

Graham was played by Bradley Walsh. Graham's travels with the Doctor helped him cope with the death of his wife. While Walsh has acted on a variety of TV shows, he is probably best known as a game show host.
10. Who directed "The Power of the Doctor" (2022)?

Answer: Jamie Magnus Stone

This was Jamie Magnus Stone's eighth episode of "Doctor Who." He started with "Spyfall, Part 1" (2020). Stone attended the Edinburgh School of Art and National Film and Television School in London.

Chris Chibnall was showrunner for Jodie Whittaker's three seasons as the Doctor.

David Tennant was the Tenth and Fourteenth Doctors. He is from Scotland, so much from Scotland his real name is McDonald.

Rachel Talalay is one of the "go to" directors for "Doctor Who" with masterpieces like "Heaven Sent/Hell Bent" (2015).
11. Which of these was NOT a painting that Kate Stewart says was vandalized by the Master?

Answer: The Birth of Venus

Boticelli's Birth of Venus (1486) was not among the artworks mentioned.

The paintings specifically mentioned were:
- The Mona Lisa, DaVinci (1506)
- The Scream, Munch (1893)
- The Girl with the Pearl Earring, Vermeer (1665)
- The Hay Wain, Constable (1821)
- The Last Supper, DaVinci (1498)

American Gothic (1930) by Grant Wood was seen, but not mentioned.

All of the paintings had been disfigured with an image of the Master (Rasputin).
12. Which companion of the First Doctor was at the support group in "The Power of the Doctor" (2022)?

Answer: Ian Chesterton

William Russell, who was in the very first episode of "Doctor Who" in 1963, returned to the show after a 57 year absence. It earned Russell a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest gap between appearances on a television show.

Russell died in June 2024. He was 99 years old.

Carole Ann Ford (Susan), Maureen O'Brien (Vicki), and Anneke Wills (Polly) were alive and could have done "Power of the Doctor" if they had wanted.

Along with Dan, Yaz, and Graham, other companions included Jo Grant, Melanie Bush, Tegan Jovanka, and Ace. Kate Stewart was there as well.
13. What were the Doctor and Yaz eating during their last scene together?

Answer: Ice cream

Thirteen and Yaz eat ice cream cones while perched high above the Earth. Jodie gets to give a heartfelt speech about how much she loved being the Doctor.

Fish fingers and Custard were a favorite of the Eleventh Doctor. Both Nine and Ten were fans of bananas.

Custard creams showed up in "The Ghost Monument" (2018) when the TARDIS got a cookie dispenser. They are simply vanilla cookies filled with custard, sort of a British Oreo. They are a personal favorite of Jodie Whittaker, so that was genuine delight at getting the cookie.
14. What was the Thirteenth Doctor's last line?

Answer: Tag, you're it

Her last line is "Doctor whoever I'm about to be, tag, you're it." A wistful ending to a great run as the Doctor.

"Blossomiest blossom" comes from writer Dennis Potter, who used it to describe the beauty in small things as he was dying of cancer.

And "Oh brilliant" was Whittaker's first line, immediately after 12's regeneration.

That spectacular cliff where the Doctor regenerates is Durdle Door, a peninsula in Dorset. It is about three hours southwest of London, not too far from Wareham.
15. David Tennant returns as the Fourteenth Doctor. His response to the regeneration is to repeat what word three times?

Answer: What

What else? In classic Ten fashion, the new Doctor rattles off a series of "whats". In a real switch, the regeneration gave the Doctor a new wardrobe as well as a new body.

The technical first phrase of Fourteen is "I know these teeth" which is a slight variation on Ten's first phrase "New Teeth. That's weird."

Tennant served as a transitional Doctor, with three specials in 2023. Although the door is open for him to return sometime in the future.
