Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What word was the Doctor yelling at the handcuffs at the start of "The Halloween Apocalypse"?

Answer: Release

The opening of "Halloween Apocalypse" is worthy of a James Bond film. The Doctor and Yar are dangling above an ocean of boiling acid on a planet that will explode in four minutes. And because that's not enough, there are killer drone robots.

They manage to use their acrobatic skills to avoid falling into the sea, dodge killer robots and fall into the TARDIS in under four minutes.

The Doctor repeatedly yells "release" at the handcuffs, even using a Scottish accent. They unlock when she says "relief".
2. What British city does "The Halloween Apocalypse" begin in?

Answer: Liverpool

The story begins in Liverpool 1821, where Joseph Williamson is building a series of mysterious tunnels. He was a real historical figure and really did build miles of tunnels beneath Liverpool.

The story flashea forward to Liverpool 2021. We get our first look at Dan, the soon-to-be new companion.

Liverpool lies on the northwest coast of England, and is a major port. It is the hometown of the Beatles (if you don't know who the Beatles are, google them immediately). The city was a filming location for several episodes of the "Flux" series.
3. What is Dan's last name?

Answer: Lewis

Dan Lewis is a native of Liverpool. When we first meet him, he is pretending to be a museum guide, and doing a good job. Later we see Dan working at a food bank. Ironically, Dan has no food at home.

Things get interesting when an alien breaks into Dan's house. Dan resists his Jedi mind tricks so the alien resorts to brute force.

Dan Lewis is played by John Bishop, who was born in Liverpool. Bishop played soccer before becoming a comedian. He was first on television in 2007 and has been a presenter as well as an actor. Lewis was 54 when he filmed "Doctor Who" making him one of the oldest companions.
4. What type of animal does Karvanista, the Lupari, look like?

Answer: Dog

Karvanista looks like a giant dog. Dan praised the Lupari for his dog costume and the alien was insulted. It turns out the Lupari are genetically bonded with individual humans. They were sending a fleet of seven billion ships to save humanity.

Karvanista manages to use the Lupari ships to form a shield around Earth, saving it - for the moment.

Karvanista was played by Craige Els. He has an impressive television resume, including a stint on "Coronation Street". Els played a major part in the "Flux" series.
5. What is the name of the prisoner who escaped the electro-magnetic cell?

Answer: Swarm

The corrections officer identified him as prisoner Swarm. He has apparently been jailed for a very very long time. A later conversation with the Doctor implies she may have caused his incarceration.

Swarm drains the life energy from one guard and turns the other into dust. He later liberates his sister Azure.

Swarm was played by Sam Spruell. He has acted on stage as well as films and television. Spruell has often been cast as a villain and has often played Russian characters.
6. What is the name of the outpost that Vinder was stationed on?

Answer: Rose

Inston-Vee Vinder is stuck on an outpost at the edge of the galaxy. We later learn his posting is retribution for challenging a powerful political figure.

Vinder has sent 21,754 dispatches. If they are hourly, he has been there around three years. He narrowly escapes destruction by the Flux.
7. What sort of creature threatens Diane?

Answer: Weeping Angel

As Diane is approaching her home, she spots a weeping angel. She quickly determines she should not blink. Unfortunately a few turns and blinks later the Angel caught her, sending her back in time.

Steven Moffatt created the Weeping Angels in "Blink" (2007). They have made several appearances since including "Angels Take Manhattan" (2012) when they took Amy and Rory.

The Doctor was confused when Diane said they had met before, but such is the life of a time traveler. Especially when Weeping Angels are involved.
8. What was the name of the planets that Vinder witnessed being destroyed by the Flux?

Answer: Thorbius

The Thorbius Triad was destroyed, among with Vinder's space station. Not much was revealed about Thorbius, aside from it being a relatively early victim of the Flux.
9. What species was plotting to attack Earth from an incredible 30 trillion light years away?

Answer: Sontarans

The Sontarans are planning to use the Lupari rescue of Earth to launch an invasion. Why they wanted to invade a planet that appeared doomed is uncertain, but logic has never been the Sontarans strong suit.

The Sontarans are a clone race who thrive on war and violence. They first appeared fighting the Third Doctor in "The Time Warrior" (1973).

Since the universe is 93 trillion light years (by British measure) across, that be near the edge of the known universe.
10. Who wrote "The Halloween Apocalypse"?

Answer: Chris Chibnall

Chris Chibnall wrote all of the "Flux" series. He wrote several excellent "Doctor Who" episodes before taking over as showrunner in 2018. Chibnall and Jodie Whitaker had worked on "Broadchurch" before he chose her as the 13th Doctor.

Jamie Magnus Stone directed several "Flux" episodes. His first episode of "Doctor Who" was "Spyfall, Part 1" (2020).

Dan Starkey returns as Kragar, a Sontaran commander. Starkey has voiced many Sontarans. He was especially popular as Strax, the partner of Jenny Flint and Madame Vastra.

Steve Oram played Joseph Williamson, a genuine historical person. He has been acting primarily in comedic films since the early 2000s. Oram has won several awards as a screenwriter.
