Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "The War of the Sontarans" (2021) begins during what conflict?

Answer: Crimean War

The shock of escaping the Flux lands the TARDIS in the Crimea, 1855. The Doctor, Yaz and Dan are near Balaklava.

Yaz and Dan are pulled out of 1855, leaving the Doctor alone with a malfunctioning TARDIS. Making this another "Doctor stranded without the TARDIS" episode.

In this version of the Crimea War, the British are fighting Sontar.
2. What figure from history did the Doctor meet in "War of the Sontarans"?

Answer: Mary Seacole

The Doctor encounters Mary Seacole on the battlefield. The hotelier accuses the Doctor of grave robbing. They later become allies.

Mary Seacole ran the British Hotel, which helped British soldiers during the Crimean War in 1855. She was a native of Jamaica who later emigrated to the UK. While her hotel was successful during the war, she wound up losing money on it.

Sara Powell played Mary Seacole. She has been working in television and films since 1992 and has also done lots of stage work. Fans of "Doctor Who" audio books may recognize her voice as she has done several adventures for Big Finish Productions.

The Thirteenth Doctor met Noor Inayat Khan, a spy during World War II, in "Spyfall Part 2" (2020). Khan worked with the French resistance and was executed by the Gestapo.

Edith Cavell was a British nurse who was executed by the Germans during World War I.
3. Between Dan and Yaz, which one wound up in Liverpool?

Answer: Dan

Dan wound up back home in Liverpool 2021, where he worked to sabotage Sontaran plans to send time ships into the past. He arrives in a city overrun with Sontarans. His first rescue is by his mom and dad. Dan later takes a wok to face down the Sontarans.

Yaz wound up with Joseph Williamson on Planet Time. She winds up in the temple, where a pyramid asks her if she can repair an interface. Yaz meets Vinder and they try and fix the temple.
4. What country has been renamed Sontar on the map in 1855?

Answer: Russia

The Doctor looks at the world map, only to discover that Russia and China have been labeled Sontar. Apparently, the Sontarans had taken over much of eastern Europe and Asia.

The shift had been relatively recent, as both Mary and the general had vague memories of a place called "Russia."
5. What was the name of the British general in "War of the Sontarans" (2021)?

Answer: Logan

Lt General Logan is dismissive of the Doctor and ignores her warnings about the Sontarans. He interrupts the Doctor as she is negotiating with the Sontaran leader because Logan is determined to fight the Sontarans.

Logan leads his men into a slaughter as British rifles are no match for Sontaran laser blasts. Logan survives the battle and only then realized the Doctor knows what she is doing.

Gerald Kyd was Logan. He is a Greek-Scottish actor born in South Africa. He gained some early fame in 1998 as Sean Maddox, the sexy doctor on the hospital drama "Casualty". While Kyd has done some film and TV, most of his work has been on stage.

The other names were British commanders during the Crimean War.
6. What line from Tennyson did the Doctor quote in "War of the Sontarans" (2021)?

Answer: Half a league onward

She was quoting Tennyson's "Charge of the Light Brigade" (December 1854). The poem is about a British military charge at the Battle of Balaklava in October 1854.

Of the 637 soldiers in the charge, 110 were killed and 161 wounded. It was one of the worst blunders in British military history.

Tennyson's poem praises the bravery of the soldiers, while noting the foolishness of those who ordered them into battle.

The Doctor says it to Mary shortly after the massacre by the Sontarans.
7. Who rescued Dan from the Sontarans on the time ship?

Answer: Karvanista

Karvanista shows up to rescue his human. Dan had made an impressive foray onto the time ship, even knocking out one Sontaran. But when confronted by four, he needed help.

Karvanista and Dan successfully hacked the time ship and used it to destroy the shipyard in Liverpool 2021.

As for Swarm, he was busy on Planet Time. And the idea of the Ravagers rescuing someone is almost ludicrous. The Doctor was stuck in 1855.
8. What was the name of the temple in "War of the Sontarans" (2021)?

Answer: Atropos

The Temple of Atropos is on the planet Time. It was accessible from the tunnels built by Joseph Williamson after he discovered tears in the space-time continuum. It contained beings who controlled time.

In Greek mythology, Atropos was one of the Three Fates. She is often seen with scissors or a knife, as she cut the thread of life. Atropos is sometimes seen as cruel as she had power over life and death.

Yaz and Vinder were at the temple for most of the episode, joined by the Doctor and Dan at the end. The Ravagers, Swarm and Azure, killed several of the Mouri and used Yaz and Vinder as replacements. That was the cliffhanger as "War of the Sontarans" ended.
9. What were the name of the priestesses in the temple?

Answer: Mouri

Since it was the Temple of Atropos, they were called Mouri, after the Moirai, the Greek name for the Three Fates.

The Flux caused serious damage to the temple, which needed repair. Things weren't helped when the Ravagers killed several of the Mouri.

Couri is Arabic for "priest." Parcae were the Roman version of the fates.
10. Who directed "War of the Sontarans" (2021)?

Answer: Jamie Magnus Stone

Jamie Magnus Stone directed the first three episodes of the "Flux" series. He directed four episodes of season twelve, including "Spyfall Part 1" (2020) and "The Timeless Child" (2020).

Chris Chibnall was show runner for the eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth series of "Doctor Who" (2018-2022). He wrote several episodes before taking over the helm, including "42" (2007) and "Dinosaurs on a Spaceship" (2012).

Dan Starkey was Svild, the wounded Sontaran questioned by the Doctor. Starkey has played Sontarans many times, and was especially popular as Strax.

Jacob Anderson played Vinder, whose space station was destroyed by the Flux. He is probably best known as Grey Worm from "Game of Thrones" (2013-19). Anderson began acting on TV in 2007. He worked with Chris Chibnall on "Broadchurch."
