MLB Average Trivia Questions

91. Which Boston Red Sox player set a Major League record for hitting safely 12 times in consecutive at-bats?

From Quiz
Baseball Mixed Salad

Answer: Pinky Higgins

None of the others ever played for the Red Sox. Higgins was a third baseman and played for the Tigers, Athletics, and Red Sox during his 1930-1946 career. In 1938 he had 12 consecutive hits over four games in the season. Pinky ended the season with a .303 batting average. Higgins went to two World Series and lost them both. He died in 1969 at the age of 59.

92. In the 2000s decade (from 2000-2009), the New York Yankees won two World Series titles. Which other team won two World Series in that decade?

From Quiz Baseball Chowder

Answer: Boston Red Sox

Not only did the other options not win two World Series, they didn't even make an appearance in the decade. The Red Sox came out on top in a big way in 2004 by putting down the Cardinals four games to none. Boston was back in it again in 2007 and it resulted in another skunking with the Colorado Rockies being on the receiving end. The Red Sox were under the helm of Terry Francona in both seasons.

93. Which 21st Century team was the first in history to hit three grand slams in one game?

From Quiz Variety Snack Pack of Baseball

Answer: New York Yankees

The St Louis Browns and Milwaukee Braves did not exist past the 1970s. It was August 25, 2011, when the Yankees were playing host to the Oakland Athletics. Curtis Granderson, Robinson Cano, and Russell Martin helped the team into the record books with the three grand salamis. The Yankees won the game 22-9. The Yankees also had 21 hits in the game.

94. Which year was the first in history that no league champion was declared?

From Quiz Baseball GPS

Answer: 1994

Organized professional baseball began in 1871 with the National Association. The August 12 day in 1994 was a dark one in baseball history. Due to the player's strike, baseball was postponed for the season. On that day the standings showed Montreal with 74 wins and Atlanta with 68, in the National League. The American League had the Yankees on top with 70 wins with the White Sox at 67. The Angels and Padres were probably happy for the strike as they both had only 47 wins.

95. Which Pittsburgh Pirate reliever went 18-1 in the 1959 season?

From Quiz Easy Peasy Baseball

Answer: Roy Face

The other pitchers listed were not in Major League Baseball at the time. The 1959 season was interesting from the mound for the Pirates. Not only did pitcher Harvey Haddix lose a perfect game in the 13th inning of a game, reliever Roy Face went an outstanding 18-1. Starting pitcher Vernon Law also went 18-9 in the season. Unfortunately, they still finished fourth in the National League with a 78-76 record.

96. Pitching great Cy Young set a record for career wins with 511. Who set a season record by winning 59 games in a season?

From Quiz Baseball Diamond Variety

Answer: Charlie Radbourn

Radbourn was in his fourth season with the Providence Gray of the National League in 1884 at the age of 29. He went 59-12 after going 48-12 in 1883. He led his Grays to the league title over the Boston Beaneaters. "Old Hoss" pitched for only 11 seasons and retired in 1891 with a 309-194 career record. Young's highest winning season was going 36-12 with his Cleveland Spiders in 1892. Feller's high was 27 with the Indians in 1940, and Spahn's season high was 23 in 1953 with the Milwaukee Braves.

97. Who was the first player in history to win back-to-back All-Star game MVP awards?

From Quiz Shuffle 'Em Up!

Trout of the Angels made his first All-Star appearance in 2012. In his third consecutive appearance in 2014 he won his first award. In 2015, he led off the game with a home run, opening the door for his second consecutive award.

From Quiz Baseball Smoothie

Answer: 1929

On May 13, 1929, the Cleveland Indians and the New York Yankees met, both with numbers, so the fans could see who their favorite players were. The Indians won the game 4-3, and the Yankees would go on to watch the Philadelphia Athletics win the AL pennant, 18 games ahead of them in second place.

102. Who was the first person ever ejected from a World Series game?

From Quiz You're Outta Here!

The others never played in a World Series. Jennings was in his 14th season of baseball when he and the Tigers went to the World Series in 1907 against the Cubs. His MVP Award came in 1990 with Oakland. His first team was the Athletics in 1979, then moved to the Yankees, then back to Oakland, then Toronto, then back to Oakland again. In 1996 he was a Padre, then an Angel in 1997. From there it was back to Oakland, then the Mets, the Mariners, then Padres, Red Sox, and the Dodgers when he retired in 2003. 108. Which Major League player in the 2009 season, hit his 500th career home run?

From Quiz Baseball's Little Bites

Although the others all hit 500+ home runs, they all retired at least 10 years earlier. Sheffield was a Detroit Tiger in 2008, and finished the season stuck on 499. Winding down the 2008 season in late September, Sheffield and Indians pitcher Fausto Carmona were suspended for their participation in a bench-clearing brawl. Gary lost four games as a result. He came back as a New York Met in 2009 to join the 500 Home Run Club. Sheffield became the 25th player in Major League history to hit 500 big ones.

109. Which franchise other than the Toronto Blue Jays, carried the "Blue Jay" team name in Major League history?

From Quiz Mix 'Em Up Baseball

Answer: NL Philadelphia

The Phillies franchise began in 1883 as the Philadelphia Quakers in the National League. In 1890, the franchise took the name of Phillies. After many dismal seasons in the late 1930s and into the 1940s, the franchise changed their name to the Blue Jays for two seasons in 1943 and 1944. The name change didn't help, so they took the Phillies name back for 1945.
