MLB Average Trivia Questions

61. Who was the first player to hit 500 home runs while wearing a Boston Red Sox uniform?

From Quiz
Baseball's Little Bites

Answer: Ted Williams

The "Splendid Splinter", "The Kid", "The Thumper", "Teddy Ballgame", and a mix of other nicknames, Williams smacked 521 home runs for Boston. This was with him missing virtually six seasons due to the war effort. Ted's season high was in 1949 when he hit 43. Williams won two AL MVP awards, and was in the top five voting another seven times. Ted found only one World Series in his 19 seasons with the Red Sox. It was in a loss to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1946.

62. The Chicago White Sox won the World Series in 2005, four games to none against the Houston Astros. The team had to wait for this World Series crown since their crown in which season?

From Quiz Mix 'Em Up Baseball

Answer: 1917

The White Sox won their first World Series crown in 1906 against their crosstown rival Cubs. Their next was in 1917 under the helm of Pants Rowland, and defeated the New York Giants four games to two. They appeared in the 1919 Black Sox Scandal in a loss to the Reds, a 1959 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, then finally won it all again in 2005 against the Astros.

63. Who was the first pitcher to win 20 games in a Major League season?

From Quiz African-Americans in Baseball

Answer: Don Newcombe

Newcombe went 20-9 with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951. He went an amazing 20-5 in 1955, but still finished seventh on the MVP list. In 1956, he won another 20 with his 27-7 record. For his efforts, he the NL MVP.

64. Major League Baseball showed a great balance between the teams from 2005-2007, as only one team in those three seasons won 100 games in a season. Which team was it?

From Quiz A Simmered Pot of Baseballs

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

No team won 100 games in either 2006 or 2007. In 2005, the Cardinals went 100-62, but didn't make it past the NLCS as they lost to Houston. The White Sox skunked the Astros in the World Series.

65. When the Red Sox lost game seven of the 1975 World Series, they blew how big of a lead?

From Quiz Famous Goats

The Red Sox, fresh off their miraculous game six win, had a 3-0 lead. They let the Cincinnati Reds score 4 unanswered runs to lose the World Series.

66. What do Roberto Clemente, Thurman Munson, and Ken Hubbs have in common?

From Quiz Baseball Stuff

Answer: Their baseball careers ended when they died in plane crashes

Clemente was a passenger on a plane that crashed en route to Nicaragua with aid for the victims of an earthquake. Hubbs and Munson both died while piloting Cessna planes. Hubbs and Munson were Rookie of the Year winners, but Clemente was not. Munson appeared in three World Series and Clemente in two, but Hubbs never made it to the Fall Classic. Clemente averaged .317, but Munson (.292) and Hubbs (.247) did not reach the .300 career mark.

From Quiz Mix 'Em Up Baseball

Answer: Jose Canseco

The others were at least 35 years old in 1986. McGwire did not play enough to have his rookie status removed, then won the rookie award in 1987 with his 49 home runs. Canseco was in the same boat in 1985 with his rookie status, then hit 33 home runs to win his rookie award in 1986.

From Quiz A Fourth Slice of Baseball

Answer: Eddie Gaedel

Gaedel is a well-documented stint of the St. Louis Browns' owner Bill Veeck. He had Gaedel pinch-hit in a game against the Tigers and pitcher Bob Cain. Eddie was walked on four pitches. In a postgame interview, Veeck stated to the press that he intended to have Gaedel pinch-hit every time the bases were loaded for the Browns. Major League baseball quickly moved on that and barred players that were 'shorter than normal' from appearing in Major League games.

The others never played shortstop or for the Padres. After Smith's fourth season in San Diego, the Padres traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1981, the first of 15 seasons wearing red. Ozzie was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002 all by himself.
