Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does the number 64 refer to in Nintendo 64?

Answer: Number of bits the system has

Nintendo was a 64-bit system, the first Nintendo console with the capacity to support games with 3-dimensional graphics. While I will not try to go in-depth on the technical specifications of earlier systems to decide whether or not it was the first 64-bit system (or whether it was even a true 64-bit system), I will say that it was not the first system to support 3-dimensional graphics.

The Atari Jaguar (1993), Sega Saturn (1994), and Sony Playstation (1994) all supported games with 3-dimensional graphics.
2. What were the first two 3-dimensional games Nintendo released in North America?

Answer: "Super Mario 64" and "Pilotwings 64"

"Super Mario 64" also proved to be the highest-selling game during the Nintendo 64's career, as well as the fourth highest-selling Nintendo game ever up to that point, selling over 11 million copies worldwide. "Pilotwings 64", however, only managed to sell about 1 million.
3. Which game for the Nintendo 64 has been most commonly referred to by gamers as "the best game of all time" as well as earning the 1998 "Game of the Year" award, despite being only the fourth top-selling game of the system?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

"Ocarina of Time" was the most popular game ever released in "The Legend of Zelda" series, and it did manage to get "Game of the Year" in 1998. It remains one of the only games to receive a perfect score from the Nintendo Power review, and received the lofty position of seventh place on Gameinformer's list of what was considered to be the top 200 games of all time. "Ocarina of Time"'s successor, "Majora's Mask", only managed to get about half the number of sales that "Ocarina of Time" did, although the fact that it was released at almost the same time as Sony's PlayStation 2 may have had something to do with it.
4. Which of the following franchises did not start on the Nintendo 64?

Answer: Harvest Moon

The characters Banjo and Kazooie first appeared on the Nintendo 64 racing game "Diddy Kong Racing" as playable characters, and later had two more games for the same system, "Banjo-Kazooie" and "Banjo-Tooie". They also had two games for the Game Boy Advance, "Banjo-Pilot" and "Banjo-Kazooie: Grunty's Revenge". "Super Smash Bros." was the fifth highest-selling game for the Nintendo 64, and was followed by "Super Smash Bros. Melee", the highest-selling Gamecube game, and then "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", a very successful Wii game. "Mario Party" was released in 1999 and followed by two more Nintendo 64 games, four Gamecube games, one Game Boy Advance game, one Nintendo DS game, and one Wii game. "Harvest Moon 64" was preceded by the now scarce SNES game "Harvest Moon" and succeeded by many games on the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Gamecube, PlayStation 2, Wii, and Nintendo DS.
5. Which of the following franchises did not have an installment for the Nintendo 64?

Answer: Metroid

The F-Zero franchise released its second game, "F-Zero X" for the Nintendo 64, while the Kirby franchised released its sixth game, "Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards" for the same system, and the Dr. Mario franchise released its second game, "Dr. Mario 64", also for the Nintendo 64. Nintendo planned another installment in the Metroid franchise, "Metroid Prime", for the Nintendo 64, which would have been the fourth installment, but it was eventually delayed so long that it was made for the Nintendo 64's successor, the Gamecube.
6. This game is the first ever to include the Mario character Waluigi, and also the first game in its series to be released on a popular console. What game matches the description given?

Answer: Mario Tennis

"Mario Tennis" was released in 2000 and was indeed the first game to feature a character who is both Luigi's counterpart and Wario's cousin, Waluigi, who has appeared on almost every "Mario" multiplayer game since. There was an earlier game called "Mario Tennis" in 1995 for the Virtual Boy, but that was a very unsuccessful system, and therefore the game is not widely known. "Mario Golf", "Mario Party" and "Mario Kart 64" were all games that did not include Waluigi.
7. Which of the following differences between the Nintendo 64 controller and the SNES controller is incorrect?

Answer: The Nintendo 64 controller lacks a D-pad

The SNES controller has the following buttons: A, B, X, Y, Start, Select, L, R, and D-pad. The Nintendo 64 controller has the following buttons: A, B, C-up, C-left, C-right, C-down, L, R, D-pad, Joystick, Start, and Z.
8. Was the "Super Mario Bros." movie starring Bob Hoskins released during the Nintendo 64 era (1996-2001)?

Answer: No

There was a live-action "Super Mario Bros." movie starring Bob Hoskins as Mario, but it was made in 1993, during the SNES era. However, it was not altogether very successful, nor was it very true to the games. While Mario bore a striking resemblance to the Mario of Nintendo, his brother, Luigi, didn't possess all the same characteristics of his video game counterpart; for example, he did not have a mustache. Also, Bowser's counterpart, known as Koopa in the movie, had a human-like form throughout nearly the entire duration of the film, not becoming reptile-like in appearance until the end of the movie.
9. Which of the following games was not anticipated for the Nintendo 64DD?

Answer: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

The Nintendo 64DD was an expansion to the Nintendo 64. DD stood for Disk Drive, because the system used game disks, the first Nintendo system to do so. However, it was only released in Japan and then was discontinued soon after, with only nine games released.

The anticipated titles were subsequently either made for the original Nintendo 64, made for the Gamecube a few years later, or cancelled. "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask" was put on the Nintendo 64, although it required so much memory that a memory card was required to play the game. "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time MasterQuest", known in Japan as "Ura Zelda" was released with the original "Ocarina of Time" game for the Gamecube. "Fire Emblem 64" was completely cancelled, delaying the North American release of a Fire Emblem game even further, and "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" was never anticipated for the Nintendo 64DD, simply designed and successfully produced for the Gamecube.
10. Which of the following was the last Nintendo 64 game Nintendo released in North America, which also happened to be the only Nintendo 64 game released in 2002?

Answer: Tony Hawk's Proskater 3

While "Tony Hawk's Proskater 3" was the last North American release for the Nintendo 64, it was an early game for some sixth generation systems, namely the Gamecube, Microsoft Xbox, and the Sony PlayStation 2. It was also released for the Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and Sony PlayStation. "Mario Party 3" was one of the last first-party games for the Nintendo 64, but it was released about a year earlier than "Tony Hawk's Proskater 3"; the release date for North America was May of 2001. This was the first "Mario Party" game to include Waluigi or Daisy as playable characters.
