...So I Blew on the Cartridge Trivia Quiz

A quick quiz on ten of my favourite games for the Nintendo 64. At one time or another, each of these games refused to work on my console, so I took it out, blew on the cartridge, put it back in, and miraculously it started working. Good luck!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "GoldenEye 007" is one of the greats of the FPS genre. Which of these is not a mode in the Multiplayer section?

Answer: Live and Let Die

Regarded as one of the greatest games of all time, Rare's "GoldenEye 007", based on the film of the same name, was one of the first proper FPS games, and has had an impact on the entire genre. The multiplayer section of the game comprises five different modes: Normal, a basic deathmatch scenario to gain the most kills in a set time; You Only Live Twice, which grants a maximum of two lives in a deathmatch; Licence to Kill, in which any attack will kill a player; The Man with the Golden Gun, where players must locate the Golden Gun, a weapon that can kill anyone with a single hit; and The Living Daylights, in which whoever holds a flag for the longest wins.
2. Without a doubt, the funniest game I've ever played is "Conker's Bad Fur Day". What is the name of Conker's girlfriend?

Answer: Berri

"Conker's Bad Fur Day" starts after a night of drinking. Conker stumbles away, not knowing where he's going. His bad fur day starts when he wakes up. Though not a commercial success, the game has a large cult following, and has actually increased in popularity over the years.

The game was created by Rare, and when Rare was bought by Microsoft, they re-released the game, with a few modifications, under the name of "Conker: Live and Reloaded" for the XBox.
3. Which of these is not a character from "Star Fox 64"/"Lylat Wars"?

Answer: Tippy McCloud

"Star Fox 64" was a remake of the original "Star Fox" game for the SNES. The main character, Fox McCloud, and his group of friends, must fight their way through the Lylat system, from Corneria to Venom. The famous phrase "Do a barrel roll" originates from this series. Fox McCloud can do a barrel roll in his Arwing to evade fire and deflect lasers, and also in the Landmaster tank later in the game, although it cannot deflect attacks.
4. "1080° Snowboarding" was a great snowboarding game created by Nintendo. How many revolutions is 1080°?

Answer: Three

You take control of one of five snowboarders as you race down snow-blanketed mountains in "1080° Snowboarding". The main aim of the game is to perform tricks using a combination of buttons on the controller, in one of the three main modes: tricks, races, and training. Like many Nintendo games, this game was praised by critics, achieving high scores on many gaming websites.

The sequel, "1080° Avalanche", was released in 2003 for the Gamecube.
5. Quite possibly my most favourite game of all time is "Banjo-Kazooie". What colour is Banjo's backpack?

Answer: Blue

Yet another Rare title that I love, "Banjo-Kazooie" combines the elements of platforming, puzzles and humour to create a classic game that stands the test of time. Banjo, a honey bear, sets out to rescue his sister, Tooty, from the evil clutches of Gruntilda the witch, who wants to use Tooty's youth to make herself beautiful. Accompanying Banjo is Kazooie, a loud-mouthed red Breegull, who lives in Banjo's blue backpack.

A sequel, "Banjo-Tooie" was released a few years later, also for the Nintendo 64.
6. What is the name of the memorable first course in "Super Mario 64"?

Answer: Bob-omb Battlefield

"Super Mario 64" was the first 3D Mario platformer, and is hailed as revolutionary title, and one of the best games ever. The basic Mario concept is in this game: Princess Peach gets kidnapped by Bowser, and Mario must rescue her. In order to do so, Mario must collect Power Stars hidden in various courses around Peach's Castle, which he can access by jumping through paintings on the walls.

The game was succeeded in 2002 by "Super Mario Sunshine", and "Super Mario Galaxy" in 2007.
7. "Mario Kart 64" is one of my favourite racing games, due to its memorable tracks and music. Which cup is Bowser's Castle found in?

Answer: Star Cup

Another successful spin-off of the main Mario series, the "Mario Kart" franchise is highly popular the world over. "Mario Kart 64" is the second game in the series, following "Super Mario Kart" for the SNES. The series features a series of cups, each with 4 courses.

In every game, the very last course in the Special Cup is Rainbow Road, a multi-coloured race track suspended high above the ground. The course before this is usually Bowser's Castle, but in the Nintendo 64 version, Bowser's Castle is the final track in the Star Cup.

The game was re-released for the Wii's Virtual Console in 2007.
8. No Nintendo 64 list of the best games would be complete without "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time". Which of these songs is not from "Ocarina of Time"?

Answer: Song of Healing

Perhaps the best "Legend of Zelda" game to date, "The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" was the first 3D title in the Zelda series. Ganondorf, the series' primary antagonist, escapes from the Sacred Realm in hopes of obtaining the Triforce, a mystical relic created by the Goddesses of Hyrule.

The titular Ocarina of Time is extremely valuable in Link's quest, and through the game, he is taught various songs to play on the ocarina. The game starts with Link as a child, but he is sealed in the Temple of Time for seven years to mature so that he may fight Ganondorf.

The game set the standard for the rest of the series, and has been hugely successful. A sequel, "The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask" was released two years later, and was regarded as being as good as its predecessor.
9. Surprise, surprise, another game by Rare. "Perfect Dark" is the spiritual successor to "GoldenEye 007". What is the first name of the main character in "Perfect Dark"?

Answer: Joanna

Another fun FPS game, "Perfect Dark" focuses on Joanna Dark in her mission to put a stop to a conspiracy by the dataDyne corporation. Her reputation and impressive track record earned Joanna the nickname 'Perfect Dark'. Rare took elements from "GoldenEye 007" and implemented them into this game, even allowing you to unlock some of the guns used by 007.

A Game Boy Colour game, also called "Perfect Dark", was released, and takes place a year before the events of the Nintendo 64 version. A series of novels and comic strips have also been created, being set further back than the GBC game.

In 2005, "Perfect Dark Zero" was created as a launch title for the XBox 360, and is set 3 years before the original game.
10. Finally, we reach "Super Smash Bros.", the original smash-and-bash between Nintendo characters. Which of these characters does NOT appear in "Super Smash Bros."?

Answer: Bowser

Described as a crossover fighting game, "Super Smash Bros." takes characters from many Nintendo games and pits them against each other. The well-known characters are there - Mario, Luigi, Link, Pikachu. But as the series continues, more and more characters are added, even some outside of Nintendo entirely.

In the most recent installment of the series, "Super Smash Bros. Brawl", Sonic the Hedgehog, the Sega mascot, was featured as a playable character. The single player mode is a series of battles against increasingly difficult foes, ending with the Master Hand.
