Board Games Trivia Questions

31. How many pieces, also called checkers, does each player have in backgammon?

From Quiz
The Basics of Backgammon

Answer: 15

On a regular backgammon set, the checkers are round, smooth pieces with no designs on them. If you were like me, you learned on the back side of a checker board and used the red and black checkers used for the game of checkers.

32. How many pieces are on the board at the beginning of a normal Shogi game?

From Quiz Shogi for Beginners

Answer: 40

Each player begins with twenty pieces: one king, one rook, one bishop, two gold generals, two silver generals, two knights, two lances, and nine pawns. In games where there is a great difference between the players' skill levels, the better of the two may begin the game with fewer than twenty pieces, often forgoing a lance, rook, or bishop or some combination thereof. There is no color difference in pieces between the two teams. The way players' pieces are differentiated is the way they are pointing. A player's pieces always point toward his opponent.

33. How is movement determined in Ultima, other than pawns?

From Quiz The Rules of Ultima

Answer: By whichever row the piece is in, except pawn and king

If the piece is in row 1 for white, row 8 for black, then it can move 1 square in any direction. If the piece is in row 2 for white, row 7 for black, it can move 2 squares, etc. Kings can move one square in any direction. Pawns may move the same as above, except for the fact that they may not move diagonally, while other pieces can.

34. This game has a door in the center and behind it lie pictures of different boys.

From Quiz Board Games in my Closet

Answer: Mystery Date

Mystery Date was one of my pre-teen favorites. You traveled the board gathering cards until you could open the door. If you were dressed appropriately for your date's outfit, you won.

35. "Brother, I am playing a game with metal pieces. I won't name all the pieces, but here are a few. There's a car, a dog, and a ship".

From Quiz What Game Is My Little Brother Playing?

Answer: Monopoly

This game is played by us a lot.

36. This game has many different editions including "Star Wars" and NHL, in the normal edition, you buy Boardwalk and different railroads. What game is it?

From Quiz Name That Board Game!

Answer: Monopoly

"Monopoly" is probably the most popular board game in the world, and has many editions.

37. This Poker game bears the name of the main character from TV's 'All In The Family'. Who was it?

From Quiz Board Games

Answer: Archie Bunker

Archie Bunker Poker was released in 1972 by Cadeaux. The container resembled one of Archie's cigar boxes.

38. Which country does the original "Ticket to Ride" game map primarily focus on?

From Quiz Ticket to Ride

Answer: United States

Alan R. Moon moved to North America when he was five years old. He lived in Canada for a few years before immigrating to the United States and would later work for several American based board game companies including Parker Brothers. "Ticket to Ride" was first published by the American game company Days of Wonder, which became a subsidiary of the France-based board game company Asmodee in 2014. The original game primarily focuses on building railroad lines across the United States and southern Canada.

39. CHESS (Western Chess). In which direction or directions can a bishop move?

From Quiz Really Classic Board Games

Answer: Diagonally

While there are many chess-like games in the world, what many people would call chess or western chess or international chess can be traced back to the 15th century. The bishop can move diagonally, thus always on the same color of square. Each player starts the game with two bishops, one on the light colored squares and one on the dark colored squares. When the game begins, each bishop is in the back row with a knight on one side and the king or queen on the other. The moves of the queen combine the diagonal movement of the bishop with the horizontal and vertical movement of the rook.

40. What does the Keep token do for the Marquise de Cat?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [4]

Answer: Prevents enemy pieces from being placed in its clearing

The keep prevents the placement of any opponent buildings or tokens, or the recruitment of warriors. For example, the Woodland Alliance cannot place a sympathy token in the keep's clearing, even with their Organize action (replace a warrior with a sympathy token). This does not stop players from moving warriors into the clearing from adjacent clearings, and it is possible for other players to rule the clearing if they get enough warriors in. The keep is also where fallen warriors are reconstituted when using the Field Hospital ability.

41. The suited dominance cards (mouse, fox, rabbit) change a player's victory condition to control three of that type of clearing at the beginning of their turn. What is the requirement of the bird dominance card?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [3]

Answer: Control two clearings on opposite corners

Controlling two corners on the opposite sides of the board is difficult, especially for the four factions that come in the base game of "Root." Some factions that were introduced in expansions (e.g. the Riverfolk Company or the Lizard Cult) have an easier time placing warriors and buildings in specific clearings, making the bird dominance card easier for them to accomplish. In the base game, the Marquise de Cats always start off controlling two opposite corner clearings (with one warrior each), but players need at least 10 points before they may play a dominance card.

42. What is the special ability of the Turtle (green) Clan?

From Quiz Rising Sun (Board Game)

Answer: Their Strongholds can move and provide Force

Each player has the same boring Stronghold tokens except the Turtle Clan, which has Strongholds on the backs of giant turtles. They can move between Provinces just like any other Figure, and contribute Force, unlike all other Strongholds. The incorrect answers for this question were simplified versions of the special abilities of the expansion clans: the Sun Clan, Moon Clan, and Fox Clan.

43. Which faction starts a game of "Root" with a warrior in eleven of the twelve clearings?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [1]

Answer: Marquise de Cat

The Marquise de Cat starts with their keep token in one of the four corner clearings, and places a warrior in every clearing except the opposite corner (where the Eyrie Dynasties will start if they are in the game). The cats start the game with the strongest board presence, and play the most conventional area-control game to gain points, but they're also the biggest target for all the other factions. In 2021, new Advanced Setup rules were released, which have the Marquise de Cat place warriors in all twelve clearings.

44. The object of this game is to make words using letters and get the highest score from the words made. Two to four people can play what game?

From Quiz Games I'll Never Play

Answer: Scrabble

"Scrabble" is played on a square board that has one hundred spaces on it, some of them marked with special features (such as double word score.) Each player always has seven random tiles and each tile has a letter on it (and a couple of blank tiles that a player can make any letter). Each letter has a point value with some of the harder letters to use having a higher point value (such as an 'X' or a 'Z'). There are multiples of commonly used letters and only one of lesser used letters. Each player then makes a word out of the letters they have chosen, as long as the word connects with any of the words that have already been placed on the board. Points are then awarded by adding the value of the letters on the tiles and any special feature spaces the player has used to place the word. Play ends when all the letter tiles have been used and the player with the highest score count wins.

45. Capturing an opponent's group of stones is a very important way to increase your territory on the board and remove your opponent's stones. What move will capture a group of your opponent's stones?

From Quiz The Game of Go

Answer: surrounding the group so there are no empty points around it

Groups can only stay on the board if they have at least one empty point adjacent. An adjacent point to a group is called a liberty in the game of Go. You are not allowed to place stones atop other stones in the game, and you are not allowed to move your opponent's stones other than to remove them after a capture. Calling out "ishi" may linguistically impress your opponent, but will not capture the stones; ishi is the Japanese term use to refer to the playing pieces.

46. There are five types of food available in Wingspan, including seeds, invertebrates, fish, and fruit. What is the fifth type of food available?

From Quiz Wingspan - A Game About Birds

Answer: Rodent

Most hawks and eagles require rodent tokens. In addition to the five food types, some birds display a "wild" symbol and thus you may use any type of food token. Hummingbirds, which drink nectar, usually have a "wild" symbol. Vultures which eat carrion often do not require any food to be played. Peregrine falcons, who predominantly eat birds, display a rodent symbol indicating their predatory nature.

47. In this game created by Matt Leacock, players must work together to prevent the spread of virulent diseases around the globe. What is it called?

From Quiz The Games I Love to Play

Answer: Pandemic

Matt Leacock first published "Pandemic" in 2008. In the game, four different diseases develop in different parts of the globe, and all the players must work together to contain outbreaks while also trying to research the cures for each of the diseases. Three expansions that bring new rules and scenarios, as well as the possibility of a fifth player, have been published: "Pandemic: On the Brink" (2009), "Pandemic: In the Lab" (2013), and "Pandemic: State of Emergency" (2015).

48. This is an such an intense game, I know families who have banned it. Can you identify the real name of FINANCIAL EXCLUSIVITY?

From Quiz Board Games Renamed

Answer: Monopoly

No game screams "America" more than Monopoly. It originated with Lizzie Magie, a writer, who wanted to a way to show how monopolies negatively affect the public good. She patented the game as "The Landlord's Game" in 1904 and 1923. In 1932, a Philadelphian named Charles Darrow played the game and liked it so much, he created his own version, which he called Monopoly and sold to Parker Brothers. When Parker Brothers learned that Monopoly was based on Magie's game, they compensated her $500.

49. This is a strategic guessing game to find your opponent's fleet before they find and sink yours. What's the name of this game?

From Quiz What's the Name of the Game?

Answer: Battleship

Battleship is a two-player guessing game. Each player has a grid in front of them that the other player can't see, the grid is marked by letters and numbers and each player places a number of different sized boats on the grid. They then take turns guessing places on the grid where they think the opponents boats are placed. Each player must answer honestly if a boat has been found and the first player to find all the hidden boats wins the game. It originated as a pencil and paper game from the first World War and has evolved to several different ways to play including a plastic board game and electronic versions.

50. "The Legends of Andor" won a prestigious German game award in 2013, a subcategory of the annual "Spiel des Jahres" (Game of the Year) award first given out in 2011. Do you know which?

From Quiz The Legends of Andor

Answer: Kennerspiel des Jahres (Connoisseurs' Game of the Year)

The "Kennerspiel des Jahres" award has been awarded annually since 2011 in recognition of more complex games for more experienced players. The first game to win this award was "7 Wonders." "The Legends of Andor" is not a children's game, so the "Kinderspiel des Jahres" award does not apply. The other two options (the special awards) are not regular categories but were given out in 2006 (Special Fantasy Game Award and Special Complex Game Award) and 2008 (Special Complex Game Award).

51. Reaching shelves in 1988, and one of the few board games to feature an icosahedron, it requires you to come up with people, places, or things that fit twelve categories that begin with the same letter. This game is...

From Quiz I Have No Time For Games

Answer: Scattergories

The 20-sided die (or icosahedron) had 20 different letters on it (excluding Q, U, V, X, Y, and Z), players would roll one letter for each to come up with an item relating to twelve designated categories that begins with the letter rolled. The more exotic item you wrote down, the better, as all players that have an item the same as any other player would not get a point. Players get bonus points for alliterative answers.

52. What is the goal of American Mah Jongg? (How do you win?)

From Quiz Can you win at Mah Jongg?

Answer: Getting a hand that matches one of the hands on the card

Mah Jongg cards with winning hands are issued every year by the National Mah Jongg League. Hands are changed from year to year so all players in the game must be using the same card. The cards have the rules of the game on the back.

53. John will be playing checkers using the white pieces. Where are his pieces placed on the board before the start of the game?

From Quiz Play Checkers (or is it Draughts?)

Answer: On the 12 black squares at his end of the board

At the start of the game, John's white pieces will occupy all twelve of the the black squares on the nearest three rows to him. Susan's black pieces will occupy the black squares at her end of the board. A game of checkers (draughts) always takes place entirely on the black squares.

54. In Zombie Dice there are three pictures that appear on the thirteen dice: brains, footsteps, and shotgun blasts. Which picture do you most want to see on your dice?

From Quiz A Roll of the Dice

Answer: Brains

In the quick game of Zombie Dice, you are playing the role of a Zombie. As in the movies, Zombies want to eat brains and avoid head wounds. On your turn, you choose three dice at random from container and roll them. Brains are set to one side and count as one point each. If you reach 13 points during the game, you win. Shotgun blasts are set to the other side and count against you. If you have three shotgun blasts during your turn, your turn ends and you lose your points from that turn. IF you stop your turn before you get three shotgun blasts, you keep your points. Any dice that show footsteps are re-rolled (along with additional dice if needed to make certain you always roll three dice at a time) again separating out any brains or shotgun blasts. The dice come in three different colors: green, yellow, and red. Green dice have the best brains to shotgun blasts ratio and red dice have the worst.

55. Would going first or last in a game of Crokinole provide a player with the better advantage?

From Quiz No Luck Required

Answer: Both positions have their own advantages

"Crokinole" is played on a circular board that is 27 inches in diameter and the surface is generally of polished timber. There is a small pocket in the centre that is worth 20 points and then three rings spreading outward worth 15, 10 and 5 points respectively. This is all surrounded by a ditch and if your disc lands in here it is out of play and it will not score. To add a degree of difficulty there are eight small bollards/posts that guard the 15 point circle. Each player has to shoot 12 discs across the polished surface to score points or knock their opponent's discs out of play. Players will take turns at this, with alternate shots, until all discs are played. The shooters have strict rules to comply with. They must only shoot from their designated quadrant. They must remain seated throughout the match. At best (or worst, depending on how you look at it) they need to have one posterior cheek on the chair at all times. And, no, they are not allowed to move their chair once play commences. Whilst some players may have a preference in going first or last, neither will provide the player with a "distinct" advantage. Going first provides the player with an unimpeded chance at the 20 point pocket. After the first shot, defensive tactics by your opponent and board congestion make this progressively more difficult. On the other hand, going last allows you the opportunity to play a hammer shot to knock your opponent out of a high scoring position or, better still, off the board, without the possibility of a reprisal. Having said that it will still require the shots to be executed with a great deal of skill to take advantage of these opportunities. Whilst the game is an examination of your dexterity it is also a test of strategy; playing a disc into your opponent's path to prevent an easy shot at the 20 points is a wise move. Leaving your disc hanging over the 20 point pocket is dangerous as it allows your challenger to bunt off your disc for an easy 20 points and knock yours out of play.

56. Unlike most chess variants, the pieces in xiangqi are placed how?

From Quiz Xiangqi

Answer: at the intersections of the board's lines

Xiangqi is played by two sides, red and green (or black). Unlike most chess variants, the pieces are placed and played on the intersections of the board. Though there are 64 squares in an 8 by 8 arrangement on a traditional xiangqi board, playing on the intersections and a split board causes the game to be played across a 9 by 10 playing field. The starting positions of the soldiers and cannons are usually marked, though this is not a necessary feature of the board. A set style that uses Staunton pieces and an actual 9 by 10 board does exist and is known as a Cambaluc Board.

57. The name "Go" was adopted in America, but the game has many different names. What is the original name for "Go"?

From Quiz The game of Go!

Answer: Wei Qi

Wei means "to surround" and is a good description of the game, that being one of the main elements of the game. Qi means board game.

58. A shockingly deep game with simple mechanics was released in 2004, designed by Friedmann Friese. Build an electric company empire by bidding on power plants, buying resources in a market and connecting to new cities before your opponents do.

From Quiz Board Games off the Beaten Path

Answer: Power Grid

At the end of 2013, Power Grid was ranked as the #8 board game of all time on boardgamegeek.com. Collect the most play money by carefully purchasing power plants and resources within a real supply-demand economy. Numerous extra maps and expansions have been released for this Friedemann Friese creation.

59. About 4600 years ago, one of the very first board games with rules that are still known today was played. It shares its name with a Mesopotamian city, and the text-speak for "you are". It's therefore known as the "Royal Game of..." what?

From Quiz The Origins of Board Games

Answer: Ur

Incredibly, the Royal Game of Ur has outlasted every major political empire in existence and is believed to have been continuously played somewhere in the world since its invention over 4500 years ago. A set dated to 2600 BC was discovered in Iraq in the 1920s. The game is relatively simple, involving the movement of pieces (called pawns) towards a goal by rolling dice.
