Board Games Trivia Questions

61. On which ancient Egyptian game was the game of checkers based?

From Quiz
A Checkers Quiz!

Answer: alquerque

In ancient Egypt, a game called alquerque, also known as qirkat, was a much played game. Historians have traced this game which was first played on a 5 by 5 board as far back as 1400 B.C.

62. Another one of the first ones we played was released in 1957 in France as "La Conquête du Monde". Which multi-player game of world domination was this?

From Quiz Wargames

Answer: Risk

"Risk" is a game in which each player attempts to conquer the world. Each player is given a certain number of armies to begin the game based on the number of players. They then take turns picking countries and placing armies one at a time until each player has all of their armies on the board. Combat takes place when one player's armies from one of his territories attack another player's territory. Dice are rolled and the high number wins. The number of dice rolled depends on the number of armies a player has involved in that battle. The game is highly strategic in how you allot your armies and what areas you try to control. Another game we loved to play.

63. In Korean chess, how are the pieces placed on the board?

From Quiz Korean Chess? Why Not!

Answer: on the points or intersections

Korean chess is played on a board with 9 files and 10 ranks of lines. The pieces are placed on the intersections of these lines. Thus, there are 90 points on the board. The pieces are placed upon and move along the points on the board.

64. What game, which is judged by some to be one of the most historically and culturally significant games ever published, am I describing? Its most basic form involves aiming small counters/discs into a container.

From Quiz Last In, First Out

Answer: Tiddlywinks

Tiddlywinks (originally called "Tiddedy Winks"), despite generally being perceived as a children's game, enjoyed huge adult popularity in the 1890s. I would say that Tiddlywinks still does have plenty of serious adult players as witnessed by the many Tiddlywinks competitions and tournaments.

65. Which game only uses the colors red and yellow (or red and black)?

From Quiz Board Games and Beyond

Answer: Connect Four

'Connect Four' is a two-player game that resembles a grid with six rows and seven columns. The object of the game is to move your red or yellow checker into one of the grids and whoever can get four in a row wins (across, down or horizontally). The game was launched in 1974 and marketed by Milton Bradley.

66. Always trying to get ahead in life. It comes so easy to some it's like there are special ladders they're climbing, while others tend to slip back down the chutes. What games does this sound like?

From Quiz Life is Just a Game

Answer: Chutes and Ladders

Chutes and Ladders first came out in 1943. You roll one die and move the number of squares indicated by the die roll. If you land on the bottom end of a ladder, you can go up. If you land on the top part of a chute, you must go down. The first person to the get to the last square at the top wins.

67. What is a "blot" in a backgammon game?

From Quiz Basic Backgammon Vocabulary

Answer: a single checker which can be hit

A "blot" is an unprotected checker which occupies a point (space) by itself. A blot is the equivalent of a military straggler; it is alone, defenseless, and vulnerable to attack by the opponent. Any blot which is hit by an opponent must go back to the beginning of the board and start the game all over again. Unfortunately, leaving a blot is a common occurrence during a backgammon game.

68. 1) I was invented by sociologist James Cooke Brown. 2) The board is made up of an outer track and several minor loops. 3) A player wins if he's the first to complete his Success Formula. Do you recognize me?

From Quiz Name That Board Game In Three Clues!

Answer: Careers

Careers was first introduced to the American public by Parker Brothers in the 1950s. It was distinctive for allowing each player the opportunity to devise his or her own Success Formula which would need to be satisfied to win the game. The player would choose to pursue Fame, Happiness or Money or a combination of all three of these categories with the goal of reaching a total of sixty points. One could try to achieve 60 points all in Happiness, perhaps split it evenly among the three with 20 points each or whatever the player chooses. Since this formula is set by the player at the beginning of the game, he or she can choose different paths well suited to fulfill his or her Success Formula hoping to achieve it prior to any other player and, therefore, winning the game. Billionaire is a game of bidding and trading in a race to become the first billionaire. Released by Parker Brothers the game requires two to four players each given an upright dollar sign as a piece and five Profit cards. A player moves by rolling a die and tries to amass his or her fortune by investing in commodities from around the world including bidding on secret sealed bids and analyzing other players' investments. Monopoly is one of the world's most famous board games. Patented by Charles Darrow in 1935 and released by Parker Brothers, the game consists of forty spaces and twenty-eight properties. By rolling two dice, players move around the board collecting money and property with the goal of ultimately owning every property and driving the other players into bankruptcy. While the places in the first game reflected locations in Atlantic City, New Jersey, there have been over a hundred different worldwide versions incorporating various city locations and other theme-based places. Life also known as The Game of Life was the first game created by Milton Bradley in 1860. On its 100th anniversary the game was reintroduced and redesigned by Reuben Klamer in much like its current format. The game took off in the 60s with spokesman Art Linkletter appearing on the game's box and even on its money. Each player is given a car and travels around a track choosing careers, earning money and even picking up a spouse and children along the way. One of the game's hallmarks is the spinning wheel numbered from one to ten which is used instead of traditional dice. Usually the player with the most money in retirement wins the game; the exception would be if a player at the end gambles everything and succeeds in becoming the Millionaire Tycoon.

69. This game featured corporations on cards that you and other players bid on. The corporations had a value and the player who acquired a billion dollars worth of corporations, won. What is this game called?

From Quiz What's in My Game Closet (U.S.)

Answer: Billionaire

The playing pieces were different colored dollar signs. If a player didn't have enough cash to meet the bid, he/she could trade in a corporation in hand to make up the difference. I don't remember if that was an actual rule or a rule we made up.

70. How many squares are on a Shogi board?

From Quiz Shogi for Beginners

71. What is the goal of each player in "Stratego"?

From Quiz Classic Board Games

Answer: To capture your opponent's flag

Marketed in North America by Milton Bradley, "Stratego" is a 2-player game in which each player has a number of pieces representing soldiers and officers in a Napoleonic army. The exact identity of each piece is hidden from the opposing side until two pieces meet at the same square upon the board. The goal is to eventually discover the location of your opponent's flag.

78. How many colored train pieces does each player receive at the start of the game in the original "Ticket to Ride"?

From Quiz Ticket to Ride

Answer: 45

When a game of "Ticket to Ride" is started each player is given 45 colored train pieces, which they will use to claim rail lines. Each player can choose to play as one of five colors (green, red, blue, yellow and purple). During each player's turn, they will have an opportunity to either claim a route or draw cards, however they cannot do both in the same turn. The game will end when a player has less than two train pieces left in their inventory, after which each person will get only one more chance to claim a route.

79. DRAUGHTS (Checkers). Which version of draughts would typically be played on the board with the largest number of spaces?

From Quiz Really Classic Board Games

Answer: Canadian draughts

There is fairly concrete proof that draughts goes back over 1,000 years and some historical suggestions that it may go back as much 5,000 years. Canadian draughts is played on a 12x12 board (144 spaces) with 30 pieces per player. International draughts is played on 10x10 board (100 spaces) with 20 pieces for each player. Both English draughts and Russian draughts are played on an 8x8 board (64 spaces) with 12 pieces for each player. Most versions of draughts follow the same general strategy of moving your pieces diagonally and capturing your opponent's pieces by jumping over them.

80. Which Marquise de Cat action is restricted to once per turn?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [4]

Answer: Recruit

The Marquise de Cat may build as many buildings as they have the lumber and open slots for, and may initiate as many battles as they want in clearings with enemy pieces, and may march their warriors around to their heart's content (respecting move rules), but they may only recruit once per turn. The recruit action adds a warrior from the supply at each recruiter building. If this action was not limited, the cats would be able to field a massive army too quickly for the other factions to counter.

81. Which pieces are counted when determining who rules a clearing?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [3]

Answer: Warriors and buildings

A requirement to build for the Eyrie Dynasties and the Marquise de Cat is that they rule the clearing they want to build in. They usually do this by having the most warriors there, but buildings also count. Two players can have buildings in the same clearing, if control switches between the build actions. Tokens do not count towards control, so the Woodland Alliance's sympathy tokens, and the cats' stacks of lumber tokens don't help them here.

82. Vagabond players are not allowed to purchase which of the Riverfolk Company's services?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) - The Riverfolk Expansion

Answer: Mercenaries

The "Law of Root" is the long-form, explicit version of the rules of "Root," covering all possible situations. It is often used as a rules reference when players encounter an edge case not covered by the simpler "Learn to Play" manual. 12.2.7.III.b of the "Law of Root" states "Vagabond Mercenaries. The Vagabond cannot buy Riverfolk mercenaries." The Vagabond usually wants to use their items for their own actions, so are less likely to purchase services, unlike the other factions that usually don't need their reserve warriors on any particular turn.

83. Which cards are set aside when they would be discarded, and can be taken by discarding a card of the same suit?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [2]

Answer: Dominance (new win condition)

On their turn, if there are any dominance cards in the discard pile, a player may discard a card from their hand of the matching suit to take that dominance card (a bird card must be discarded to take the bird dominance card). The player may then play the dominance card to change their victory condition from "earn 30 points" to "control certain clearings at the beginning of your turn."

84. There are lots opportunities for ties in "Rising Sun." How are they resolved?

From Quiz Rising Sun (Board Game)

Answer: Whoever is higher on the Honor track

Players cannot occupy the same spot on the Honor Track; when a player moves up or down, they trade places with the player immediately beside them. Ties are settled using the Honor Track in both the Political Phase, the War Phase, and at the end of the game when looking at Victory Points. The only time the Honor Track is not used to break a tie is if the two players with the most Victory Points at the end of the game also happen to be in an alliance. Then the victory is shared.

85. Which faction can place pieces in the forests between clearings and paths?

From Quiz Root (Board Game) [1]

Answer: Vagabond

The board of "Root" is divided into twelve clearings, connected by paths, with forests in between. All movement of pieces is restricted to these clearings and paths except for the Vagabond player. The Vagabond has a single pawn (not considered a warrior), and can slip into the forest where no other faction can hurt it. This is useful for repairing broken items, but usually Vagabond players will want to stay on the main part of the board as much as possible.

86. Who has hours to dedicate to this board game in which the goal is to obtain forty-two territories?

From Quiz Games I'll Never Play

Answer: Risk

Between two and six players can play this game and although the game can take anywhere from hours to days to play, the rules are simple enough that families or adults can play. The board itself has a political map on it with six continents and forty-two territories depicted. Players are issued armies and turns are rotated amongst the players. The object is to attack and take over each of the territories on the board. Players can form alliances to help each other gain control of territories. A player is out of the game when they have no territories left. This game has influenced lots of other strategy-based games such as "Settlers of Catan."

87. How many bird cards are dealt to each player at the start of the game?

From Quiz Wingspan - A Game About Birds

Answer: 5

Each player begins the game with five bird cards, two bonus cards and one of each type of food. Before the first turn, each player must discard food tokens and bird cards until they have a total (cards plus tokens) of five - for example, you might keep 3 bird cards and 2 food types.

88. In the original version of this game by Alan R. Moon, players compete with each other to connect different cities in the United States and Canada with trains. What is its name?

From Quiz The Games I Love to Play

Answer: Ticket to Ride

"Ticket to Ride" was first published in 2004 and quickly became a popular family game, winning the Origins Award for Best Board Game of 2004. Since its release, a number of other editions have been published (as standalone games) featuring different locations, including Europe (2005), the Nordic countries (2007), and Germany (2012) as well as one based on the Märklin model trains (2006). Expansion kits that feature other maps have also been introduced that must be used with one of the existing boards.

89. If I gave you a HINT, would you be able to identify this game? Enter its real name.

From Quiz Board Games Renamed

Answer: Clue & Cluedo

Clue (U.S.) or Cluedo (U.K.) appeared in the 1940s. The setting of this game is a mansion, and the players are guests or staff. A murder has taken place, and players must figure out who committed the murder, what murder weapon was used, and in what room the murder took place.
