From Quiz Random Civil War Facts

Answer: 1st Minnesota

The Governor of Minnesota was in Washington when the war broke out. He promptly offered to raise an infantry regiment from his state for government service. 34. What special distinction could be said of the George Washington Parke Custis, the Stepping Stones, the Wachusett, the Tioga, the Port Royal, and the Delaware?

From Quiz Civil War Firsts

Answer: They formed the first US carrier task force

Although the carrier task force, and the aircraft carrier in particular, as we know it today essentially originated in the early part of the twentieth century, the carrier and carrier task force can be said to have originated during the nineteenth century. The USS George Washinton Parke Custis was a coal barge that had been converted to serve as a balloon carrier, and appears to be the first aircraft carrier to be designed, or redesigned, as such to serve in the US Navy. At least one recon flight was launched from the deck of this ship. The USS Stepping Stones served as a tug for the George Washington Parke Custis. Of the escorting ships of the task force, the USS Wachusett was a sloop of war, the USS Delaware was a steamer turned into an armed transport, and both the USS Tioga and USS Port Royal were gunboats. One major difference between this task force and the modern one is that it never served as such on the open ocean.

From Quiz Politics of the U.S. Civil War #2

Answer: Claiborne Fox Jackson

Jackson's plans were foiled when Brigadier-General Nathaniel Lyon captured the State Guard's camp. Jackson would later lead a session of the Missouri General Assembly that passed an ordinance of secession. The session, and therefore the vote, was not legal, as it did not have a majority of members present. The results of the vote were accepted by the Confederate Government, however, and Jackson would claim to be the governor of Missouri in exile until his death.

38. Prior to the battle at Gettysburg, this engagement took place on June 30, 1863 between troops of Maj. Gen. J. E. B. Stuart and Union troops in York County, Pa.. Name the Union Commander.

From Quiz Ten New WBTS Questions

Answer: 1865

Although 1865 was one of the shortest years of the War it was the most deadly for the prisoners at Camp Chase. Overcrowding in Union prisons became common toward the end of the War, especially with the lack of frequent prisoner exchanges. The winter of 1864-65 was also one of the coldest on record. On January 27, 1865 the local Columbus newspaper reported 18 degrees below zero. The massive number of soldiers dying in Southern prisons also encouraged poor treatment of the Confederate prisoners in Northern prisons.

45. On March 12th, 1864, an open letter to the editor was published in the New York Herald that sharply criticized George Meade's handling of events at the Battle of Gettysburg. How was this letter signed?

From Quiz Nitty-Gritty Civil War

Answer: Historicus

To this day the true identity of "Historicus" remains a mystery. At the time of the letters publication, George Meade and Henry Halleck believed that the author was Daniel Sickles (Union Third Corps commander at Gettysburg). While the letter was highly critical of Meade (and Halleck) it praised Sickles' actions on 2 July 1863. Although the letter did not reflect Sickles' writing style, Meade and Halleck both believed that the content of the letter did reflect Sickles' attitude and opinions. Today, historians tend to agree with Meade and Halleck, and believe that Sickles may very well have been involved in its creation through a second party author. Meade and Halleck never pressed the issue and Sickles never admitted any involvement in the incident that has come to be known as the "Historicus Letter".
