He was mortally wounded in the Battle of Shiloh, April 6-7, 1862, Johnston's death wound, ironically, need not have been fatal. He had been hit in the bend of the knee by a stray bullet. The bullet tore an artery, and in the excitement of the moment, the wound went unnoticed. He bled to death.
