Movies: Something in Common Trivia Questions

211. In this film, a teenage girl decides to do a number of things she has always been interested in doing, before she passes away, since she is suffering from leukemia. Which film is this?

From Quiz
Cancer In The Movies

"Now Is Good" was released in 2012. It starred Dakota Fanning in the role of Tessa Scott. It tells the story of a teenage girl named Tessa who is suffering from terminal leukemia. Since Tessa knows she won't be around for very long, she decides to make a list of things she wants to do before she succumbs to her illness. Her friends, family and acquaintances react differently to her idea. Her mother supports her idea, while her father doesn't want to accept the fact that she is terminally ill and hence she won't be around for very long, while her friend Zoey tries to help her to achieve what she wants to.

212. Who played Annette Bening's lover, Jules, in the movie 'The Kids Are All Right'?

From Quiz Rainbow Roles

Answer: Julianne Moore

The movie was directed by Lisa Cholodenko. It also starred Mark Ruffalo, Josh Hutcherson and Mia Wasikowska. In the movie, Nic (Bening) and Jules were partners who had kids together named Laser and Joni. The kids later meet the person who donated the sperm that Nic and Jules used. The movie received good reviews and was nominated for many Oscars. Ruffalo and Bening were nominated for their performances. Moore has played the lover to Ellen Page's character in 'Freeheld'. She has also appeared in movies such as 'The Big Lebowski' and 'Far From Heaven'. She won an Oscar for her performance in the movie 'Still Alice'.

213. In 1947, "Gentlemen's Agreement" was released which had antisemitism as the major theme. Who starred as the lead actor?

From Quiz Movies with a Jewish Theme

Answer: Gregory Peck

Peck plays Phil Green, a widowed journalist who has just moved to New York City. He gets an assignment from a high-profile magazine to do an article on antisemitism. In order to better understand and write about the topic, he pretends to be Jewish. All of a sudden he begins to encounter bigotry, both firsthand and from his friend Dave Goldman (John Garfield). He meets and falls in love with Kathy Lacey (Dorothy McGuire) from Darien, Connecticut, but the article and its subject matter begins to affect those around him, including his relationship with his fiancee. The film is based on the book by Laura Z. Hobson. Elia Kazan won the Academy Award for Best Director for the film.

214. Who got stabbed by a spaceship in "Flash Gordon" (1980)?

From Quiz Strange Things Are Happening IV

Answer: Ming the Merciless

When Flash Gordon used a stolen spaceship to crash (literally) the wedding between Dale and Ming the Merciless, the spike sticking from the front of the spaceship stabbed Ming. Ming pulled himself away while bleeding black blood. Flash threatened him with a sword, but Ming disappeared in a flash, although his magic ring remained and fell to the pavement. A floating machine told Flash he had saved the Earth. Later, a gloved hand picked up the ring.

215. In which movie did "Puberty Love" get rid of a bunch of monsters?

From Quiz Strange Things Are Happening II

Answer: Attack of the Killer Tomatoes

To show that anything could be a movie monster, a bunch of mutated tomatoes killed people in "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes". The hero, Mason Dixon, discovered that an awful song called "Puberty Love" turned the mutants back into regular tomatoes.

216. Tom Berenger starred as Thomas Beckett, the title character in the 1993 film "Sniper" and most of the sequels. Which of the "Sniper" franchise did not include an appearance by Berenger?

From Quiz X Marks the Shot

Answer: Sniper: Reloaded

Tom Berenger (b. 1949) was the lead actor for the first three films, hunting villains in Panama ("Sniper", 1993), Serbia ("Sniper 2", 2002) and Vietnam ("Sniper 3", 2004) as Thomas Beckett. In "Sniper: Reloaded" (2011), the focus shifted to Beckett's son, Brandon, played by Chad Michael Collins (b. 1979), who hunts villains in the Congo. For "Sniper: Legacy" (2014), Brandon hunts down an assassin that he thinks killed his father, but he's been tricked. His father is still alive and Berenger reprises the role.

217. In which movie does a man travel back in time to become his own grandpa?

From Quiz Strange Things Are Happening

Answer: Time Rider

In the movie "Time Rider", some scientists are attempting to zap an object in the desert into the past and bring it back. However, a man riding on a motor cycle gets in the way and gets zapped into the past. The scientists discover who the man was, and find out that the woman in the past who the "time rider" hooked up with was in fact his grandmother, so the man was his own grandpa. The film was written by Michael Nesmith, formerly of the singing group "The Monkees".

218. Q. "John Q.", about an 'everyman' and his medical insurance, starred whom?

From Quiz Starring... (P-Z)

Answer: Denzel Washington

In this 2002 movie directed by Nick Cassavetes (son of John Cassavetes and Gena Rowlands), Denzel Washington is John Quincy Archibald whose son desperately needs a heart transplant which John's insurance won't cover (this was before 'Obamacare'). All of the choices are from the TV drama "St. Elsewhere", where Denzel got his start. Washington is another two time Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor in "Glory" and Best Actor in "Training Day".

219. What was the name of the movie where Barbara Stanwyck played the cunning Phyllis Dietrichson?

From Quiz Hollywood Heroines

Answer: Double Indemnity

Barbara Stanwyck was one of those great actresses who never won an Academy Award for the parts she played; finally at the 1982 Awards she was presented with an Honorary Oscar. She was memorable in just about every film in which she was cast (comedy and drama), but my personal favorite was her portrayal of the scheming Phyllis in "Double Indemnity" (1944), where she plays a scheming seductress who lures Fred MacMurray into her evil murder plans.

220. This movie is about two big families who have many difficulties with becoming one very big family. Which movie is this?

From Quiz Movies With Big Families

Answer: Yours, Mine and Ours

"Yours, Mine and Ours" is about an Admiral with eight highly disciplined children who marries his hippie-like high school-girlfriend who has 10 children. These 18 very different children now have to move in together. Not only do they have to share a house, but they also have to share bedrooms with one another. This causes some getting used to for everybody.

221. Scarlett O'Hara, heroine of "Gone with the Wind" (1939), spends much of her time jealous of someone or causing the same emotion to be felt by others. Whose husband did she covet throughout the movie?

From Quiz The Green-Eyed Monster

Answer: Melanie

Melanie (Olivia de Havilland) is married to the object of Scarlett's desire, Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard). Melanie is such a sweet person that she never thinks ill of Scarlett, and counts her as a friend always. Suellen and Carreen are Scarlett's sisters, and Prissy is pressed into service to help Scarlett deliver Melanie's baby in beleaguered Atlanta.

222. Eliot Ness drafts Officer Jimmy Malone to be part of his team in "The Untouchables", but which actor played Malone?

From Quiz Movie Sidekicks

Answer: Sean Connery

The 1987 film "The Untouchables" is based on real life government agent Eliot Ness and his special task force assigned to fight mobsters and corruption in the 1930s. Eliot Ness is played by Kevin Costner. Robert De Niro is 'Scarface' himself, Al Capone, and Sean Connery is Irish-American Officer Jimmy Malone, who is based on real life agent and member of The Untouchables, Marty Lahart. Malone is the one who tells Ness, "You wanna know how to get Capone? They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital. You send one of his to the morgue." This movie shows that Sean Connery is not just a handsome James Bond, but a fine actor as well.

223. In the 1980 film "The Gods Must Be Crazy", a whole African tribes' perspective changes when what falls from the sky?

From Quiz More Movie Props

Answer: a Coke bottle

A bushman of the Kalahari desert named Xi encounters a Coke bottle on one of his journeys and brings it back to his people, the San tribe (I guess that makes them 'Sans of the Kalahari'). They are a happy tribe who live off the land and believe that God will provide for their needs. As it happens, a coke bottle is thrown from an airplane and lands unbroken in the desert. This strange object is their first encounter with any kind of 'technology' and they think it is a 'present' from God for use as a tool, for music, etc... but there is only one bottle and this stirs up envy and anger. They conclude the bottle is 'evil', and Xi must go to the 'edge of the world' to dispose of it.

224. In 1963's "The Great Escape", who plays the Tunnel King?

From Quiz Da ToughGuys

Answer: Charles Bronson

Charles Bronson makes headway slowly and steadily, digging out the escape tunnel for several prisoners of war. His character is claustrophobic, which is ironic, as Bronson himself was claustrophobic, having done mining work as a boy. Two of the problems the prisoners have is defraying the suspicion of the guards, and getting rid of the dirt they dig up. Steve McQueen plays the "Cooler King" - as he usually provokes punishment from the guards and ends up in the box called the 'cooler'. Donald Pleasance plays the Forger. Documents will be necessary once they are all free - but, would they all make it? Well worth watching to find out! Bronson also made the "Death Wish" series of films.

225. "Outbreak" was a 1995 classic with an all star cast based on the popular book "Hot Zone" by Richard Preston. What was the name of the Capuchin who played host to the virus in the film?

From Quiz Sickness on the Silver Screen

Answer: Betsy

Betsy had been smuggled to America from Zaire where the original outbreak occurred. The Ebola like virus named Motaba in the film mutated to become airborne prompting a military issued quarantine of the California town. While the movie is largely unrealistic, there was an outbreak of Ebola occurring in Zaire at the time of release.

226. In "Kingdom of Heaven" Orlando Bloom plays a young man, Balian, who leaves his village to become a Crusader in Jerusalem. What traumatic event was instrumental in his decision to go?

From Quiz Long Ago and Far Away...

Answer: Killing his brother

Balian kills his half brother, a priest, due to events following the suicide of his wife and then flees to join his Crusader father in the Holy Land. The character of Balian is very loosely based on the real life Balian of Ibelin, a leading player in the convoluted politics of the Holy Land in the twelfth century. First released in 2005 the film attracted criticism on the grounds of historical inaccuracy and because of what was seen as a romanticized view of the Crusades. At the box office it did well in Arabic countries but not in America until the release of a director's cut, reportedly Riddley Scott's preferred version. This included a feature supporting the historical perspective. Stars include Orlando Bloom, Liam Neeson and Eva Green.

227. What film incorporates Cyberdyne Systems, Skynet and sunglasses?

From Quiz Let's Give Movies Their Props

Answer: The Terminator

It all started when a cyborg assassin created by Cyberdine Systems, The Terminator, was sent back in time from 2029 to 1984 in order to kill Sarah Connor. Kyle Reese is sent back to protect her and discloses the existence of Skynet, an artificial intelligence system that will cause a nuclear holocaust (what ever happened to 'the prime directive'?). It seems Sarah Connor is the target since her unborn son becomes the leader of the battle against these forces. A wonderful science fiction film, it spawned several sequels, i.e. Schwarzenegger and his iconic sunglasses was right when he said his famous line "I'll be back!".

228. In 2001 Brad Pitt starred in 'The Mexican'. Who was his female co-star?

From Quiz X Films

Answer: Julia Roberts

Brad Pitt plays Jerry Welbach, who has to do penance for causing crime boss Arnold Margolese, portrayed by Gene Hackman, to be jailed. Jerry is sent in search of an antique gun, the Mexican of the title. Julia Roberts plays Samantha Barzel, Pitt's love interest, adding him to an impressive list of co-stars. Although it wasn't her first film, 'Pretty Woman' brought Julia into the public eye in 1990, when she played opposite Richard Gere. She starred with Hugh Grant in 'Notting Hill' (1999) and with George Clooney and Brad Pitt in 'Oceans Eleven' (2001) and 'Ocean's Twelve' (2004). The other actresses appeared with Pitt in 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' (2005 - Angelina Jolie), 'Seven' (1995 - Gwyneth Paltrow) and 'Thelma and Louise' (1991 - Geena Davis).

229. In "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981), which was set in 1936, there is a flight to Nepal depicted with a background of map of the the region. What is wrong with the scene?

From Quiz Would Jesus Wear a Rolex?

Answer: The map shows Thailand and Jordan which did not exist in 1936.

The map showed the countries of Thailand (named as such in 1939) and Jordan (1949) both of which did not exist in 1936. The correct names would have been Siam and Transjordan. Later in the movie, the same "map-effect" is employed on a flight to Cairo showing Iran, Iraq and Israel, none of which existed in 1936. One of the planes depicted is also an anachronism; the flying boat is a Short Solent 3, introduced in 1946.

230. Marlon Wayans was the stoner dude in this parody film from 2001. Trapped in a haunted house, 'Shorty', feeding his marijuana plant, was attacked by the possessed weed and smoked up. What was the movie?

From Quiz Stoner Dude

Answer: Scary Movie 2

In this film, a follow-up (in a sense) to the original "Scary Movie", but set in a haunted house instead of poking fun directly at the slasher genre, put some of the old favourites into the haunted 'Hell House' and pitted them against the horrible evil that was Hugh Kane. Marlon Wayans' Shorty ended up facing off against his marijuana plant (and was rolled up and smoked), but he was saved by Ray, Buddy, and Brenda who, in a moment of brilliance, ended up tossing some munchies into the room to distract the monster. The Wayans Brothers didn't return for the third film in the series despite the fact that they originally conceived the series. They ended up making "A Haunted House" in 2013 instead.

231. In the movie 'The Fugitive', how can the outlaw who committed the crime that got Harrison Ford's character incarcerated be appropriately described?

From Quiz Pass the Buck

Answer: One armed man

'The Fugitive' was directed by Andrew Davis and also starred Tommy Lee Jones, Sela Ward and Tom Wood. The one armed man's name was Fredrick Sykes and was played by Andreas Katsulas. Julianne Moore had a small part in the movie too. It was based on a TV show. The main plot of the movie revolved around a man who is wrongly imprisoned for the murder of his wife. He then escapes the prison and tries to prove his innocence by finding the man who did it. Jones won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this movie. It was nominated for Best Picture too. It was critically acclaimed! Dr. Richard Kimble was blamed for Fredrick's crime!

232. This 1993 movie that stars Alicia Silverstone is about a young girl who becomes infatuated with a man several years older than her, and makes his life miserable by stalking him! What is the name of this film?

From Quiz Look Who's Stalking!

Answer: The Crush

Cary Elwes stars as a journalist named Nick Eliot. All seems to be going well for Nick, until he meets his landlord's 14-year-old daughter Adrian, who becomes so obsessed with Nick...and goes to great lengths to prove to him that she won't ever take "No" for an answer! This is Alicia Silverstone's feature film debut.

233. Which American playwright authored the play, "Dark at the the Top of the Stairs", which later became a movie?

From Quiz Alone in the Dark Room

Answer: William Inge

William Inge was born in Independence, Kansas in 1913. His mother ran a boarding house in town. Some of the people who lodged there became the inspiration for his characters. He won The Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play "Picnic". It was later made into a movie and won two Academy Awards. Other plays of his that were made into movies were "Bus Stop", which starred Marilyn Monroe, and "Dark at the Top of the Stairs".

234. Alex' daydreams in this 2000 horror film foretell several accidents, beginning with the horrific plane crash of Flight 180, heading to Paris with his high school French class. What was the movie?

From Quiz Dreaming the Future

Answer: Final Destination

"Final Destination", due to its popularity and, inevitably, its tendency to be no more than a series of whimsical Rube Goldberg-esque death sequences, ended up spurning a long-running series featuring then-semi-popular twenty-something actors who needed a push to their careers. Later sequels included Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Nicholas D'Agosto, and Emma Bell. The first movie, however, brought the whole concept to the screen. After escaping their deaths on the flight, Alex (played by Devon Sawa) and his friends found that Death still needed to reap their souls at any cost, and their own deaths were inevitable. Premonitions occurred in every subsequent film, often seen by the main character.

235. The part of Professor Higgins "My Fair Lady" would have been quite different if played by the original choice of actor - Cary Grant. Instead, an English actor with a 'cut glass' accent took the part. Who was that?

From Quiz Why Didn't I Do That?

Answer: Rex Harrison

"My Fair Lady" was a musical film based on the play "Pygmalion" by George Bernard Shaw in which the professor takes a bet that he can groom a cockney flower seller in her speech and general deportment so that she will become acceptable in London High Society. Rex Harrison made his career by playing suave scoundrels on stage and screen. He won three TONY awards, for "Anne of a Thousand Days", "My Fair Lady" and the George Bernard Shaw play "Heartbread House". In his private life, he seems to have been universally disliked.

236. Earth fought back after being attacked. The Terran Federation Corvette Rodger Young brought the war to the bugs in what 1997 movie?

From Quiz Sci-Fi Movies by Spacecraft

Answer: Starship Troopers

This film was a departure from the flashback format of Robert Heinlein's novel, "Starship Troopers" and contained more action laid out chronologically. The story followed a young man's journey through war. 237. An outspoken factory worker (played by Sally Field) loses her job and risks her marriage and the safety of her family when she campaigns for labor reform in what award-winning film?

From Quiz You're My Hero!

Answer: Norma Rae

Norma Rae Webster is a young mother whose somewhat rebellious lifestyle is a topic of conversation in the small factory town where she resides. Fed up with the sweat shop conditions at the textile mill that employs most of her family and friends, she becomes intrigued by a visit from a labor union representative and begins to lobby for the right to organize workers within the factory. When management fights her efforts, she bravely explains to her children that they might hear bad things around town about their mother, but that they should hold their heads high and respect themselves as human beings. She is subsequently fired for her activities, but succeeds in leading a shut down in protest when she jumps on top of her work table and holds a sign over her head with the word "UNION" hand printed on it. Her hard work finally pays off when workers vote for the union, but it's too late for Norma Rae's father, who has already died of a heart attack after a supervisor refuses him a break when he complains of numbness in his arm. The 1979 drama is based on the real life story of Crystal Lee Sutton, a Roanoke Rapids, NC woman who was instrumental in bringing union representation into the textile industry in the Southern US. Ms. Sutton was quoted as saying that most of the events in the movie were accurate. After winning the battle in her hometown, she went on to represent the union as a paid organizer, becoming, like her fictional counterpart, an inspiration for the working class in America.

Answer: Lionel Barrymore

Lionel Barrymore was a Hollywood icon from an acting family. His siblings, John and Ethel, were both honored actors. Although modern audiences know him chiefly as Mr. Potter in the Christmas film "It's a Wonderful Life" (1946), he actually began in films in 1911 and appeared in 11 D. W. Griffith productions. He won an Academy Award in 1931 for his performance in the film "A Free Soul". Barrymore had chronic arthritis from 1926 on. After 1938 he appeared only on screen in a wheelchair. In "Washington Masquerade" he seems to shuffle when he walks very awkwardly. In some scenes he leans against props such as a desk or he is given support from other actors. Hattie McDaniel, in what is believed to be her first screen appearance, has a minor part as a maid.

239. Philip K. Dick's novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" was the basis for what 1982 dystopian movie set in the far future of 2019 Los Angeles?

From Quiz Joy to the Joyless

Answer: Blade Runner

"Blade Runner" was an initially unsuccessful 1982 movie, but is now viewed as a cult classic. "Blade Runner" is about the hunt for rogue "replicants", mechanical recreations of human beings with fixed lifespans. Harrison Ford plays Deckard a police officer, a "blade runner", whose specialty is to hunt and kill replicants who have either committed crimes or escaped the limited areas they are permitted. The movie follows Deckard as he seeks and finds a series of rogue replicants. In the process, Deckard falls in love with a woman who is both a replicant and unaware of her condition, played by Sean Young. Ford's Deckard eventually kills the rogue replicants, who are led by Rutger Hauer. The movie ends in ambiguity as Deckard flees the ever depressing task of killing almost humans while questioning his own humanity. Philip K. Dick is a legendary science fiction writer, whose cautionary tales of the dark side of technology and genetic advancement are the basis for several popular dystopian movies. In addition to writing the source material for "Blade Runner", Dick authored the novel "We Can Remember it for You Wholesale", upon which the 1990 and 2012 movies "Total Recall" are based. Dick's chilling short story "The Minority Report" about the development of precognition as a skill that is used by the government and police is the basis for the 2002 Steven Spielberg directed film "Minority Report". Director Richard Linklater adapted one of Dick's most personal stories into the 2006's "A Scanner Darkly".
