Movies: Something in Common Trivia Questions

121. The man who made the words "I am invincible!" famous was Boris Grishenko from the James Bond film "Goldeneye." What eventually proved Boris wrong?

From Quiz
I Am Invincible!

Answer: Frozen by liquid nitrogen

Boris was played by Alan Cumming. Boris was a computer programmer who sexually harassed his co-workers when he wasn't proclaiming his invincibility. He set the story in motion in "Goldeneye" by helping the villains steal the computer codes needed to operate the laser weapon in space. Seconds after shouting "I am invincible!" (for the last time) Boris was turned into a statue by a blast of liquid nitrogen, a result of massive explosions triggered by James Bond. Alex Trevelayan (Sean Bean), Bond's main nemesis in "Goldenye," was crushed by the satellite dish after a fight with Bond. Xenia Onatopp (Famke Janssen), the chief henchwoman, was strangled in the tree.

122. Which Christopher Guest movie, released in 2006, is about the buzz for the fictional movie 'Home for Purim'?

From Quiz A Little Less Appreciated

Answer: For Your Consideration

Although only receiving a minimal limited release, "For Your Consideration" is another Christopher Guest feature to make use of his frequent ensemble cast, including Eugene Levy, Parker Posey, Catherine O'Hara, Jane Lynch, and others. The film is based around the production of the expected-to-be Oscar-worthy 'Home for Purim'. Of course, as Oscar buzz increased for the film, many of the actors and crew (and the studio) make changes to themselves and the film to ensure that their nomination is set). Coincidentally, during Oscar season of the same year, Catherine O'Hara was speculated to be one of the 'Best Actress' nominees. It never happened, just like in the film.

123. This 1968 Japanese creature-fest is set in the year 1999, complete with a scientific base on the moon, daily trips to and from Earth, and a little-known Pacific island where all the world's giant monsters live. What film is this?

From Quiz Futuristic Movies of the Past

Answer: Destroy All Monsters

An alien force takes control of the monsters and forces them to attack major cities across the world. Toho's star monster, Godzilla, lays waste to New York City, Mothra takes Beijing, and Rodan flies over Moscow. In all, eleven of Toho's film monsters appear in this movie. 'Frankenstein', 'Gargantuans' and 'War' were also Japanese films made around the same time.

124. The bite of a vampire in Tomas Alfredson's "Let the Right One In" seals the fate of many characters. Who is the main vampire in the film?

From Quiz Once Bitten...

Answer: Eli

A Swedish vampire film released in 2008, "Let the Right One In" made several appearances in international film festivals before a limited theatrical release, and as a result, it picked up a number of awards. The film follows two children, Oskar and Eli. When it is determined that Eli is a vampire, Oskar finds it difficult to continue to love her, and Eli continues to struggle with her affliction. The film covers numerous different characteristics of vampire lore including the notion that vampires can not enter a room without being asked to do so. When Eli bites one woman during the film, her descent into vampirism is clearly shown. When she arrives in the hospital and the blinds in her room are drawn open, she sets ablaze.

125. Be careful - if you board this vessel, aliens may leave a doppelganger in your place. In what movie does the vessel Gunstar appear?

From Quiz Our In Flight Space Movie Is...

Answer: The Last Starfighter

Robert Preston gives a memorable performance as the recruiter for a galactic war effort, using a video game on Earth to seek out someone who has the skills to run the controls of a starfighter vessel. Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) finds himself an unwilling starfighter, and the ONLY starfighter, left to battle evil. Young Mr. Guest does a remarkable job playing the Beta Alex, a doppelganger left to hide Alex's disappearance, who has a lot to learn about the human race.

126. In this movie, a comet collides with the Earth, causing a giant tsunami in the Atlantic Ocean. Astronauts are sent to destroy a larger piece of the same comet with explosives. What 1998 film (which does NOT star Bruce Willis) is it?

From Quiz "That Movie Blows Up Well"

Answer: Deep Impact

While "Armageddon" follows a very similar plotline and was released around the same time, the asteroids hurtling towards Earth don't land in the Atlantic. Many smaller asteroids crash into major cities, even going so far as to destroy Shanghai, but Bruce Willis and his crew of oil drillers and astronauts hop on the major asteroid and split it into two before the end of the film, missing Earth by a small bit. "Deep Impact" sees a comet heading directly towards Earth and while it's blown up early on, it simply splits into two chunks, the first of which lands in the Atlantic Ocean causing a tsunami that wipes out many people and the second of which is destroyed at the last moment in space. Very explosive movie...you'd wonder why Roland Emmerich didn't direct it. Mimi Leder directed "Deep Impact" (she's also known for "Pay It Forward") and the film starred Elijah Wood, Tea Leoni, Leelee Sobieski, Robert Duvall, and Morgan Freeman. it didn't earn as much as "Armageddon" in theaters (with over $550,000,000 in revenue), but it did quite well for itself, bringing in well over $300,000,000.

127. What was James Caan's partner's name in the movie "Alien Nation"?

From Quiz And You Think YOUR Name Stinks!

Answer: Sam Francisco

Some aliens received joke names from immigration officials. James Caan's character (Matthew Sykes) started calling him "George" to avoid embarrassment. "George" commented that in his language, Sykes sounded like two different words: excrement and cranium. "George" and the other Newcomers were bred for the sole purpose of slavery on their home planet. Despite being persecuted for being different, "George" was happy to be free on Earth. George's name was originally supposed to be George Jetson, but Hanna-Barbera wouldn't release rights to the name. They kept the name George in the movie as an inside joke.

128. One of my all-time favourite movies is 'How to Steal a Million', and the plot has Peter O'Toole and Audrey Hepburn robbing an art museum. Who plays Audrey's nefarious father in the movie?

From Quiz Father on Film

Answer: Hugh Griffith

Hugh or Huw Griffith (he was either one or the other in film and stage credits) was born in Wales in 1912 and died in England in 1980. He was a brilliant actor who had a successful stage and film career on both sides of the Atlantic. He began acting just before the onset of World War II and set aside his ambitions to serve with the British army in India and Burma. At the end of the war, he returned to England and resumed his acting career. In 1959 he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Sheik Iderim in 'Ben Hur'. He is an absolute delight as the roguish Charles Bonnet, father to Nicole (Audrey Hepburn). If you've never seen this clever comedy, I urge you to rent it. Eli Wallach plays the man Audrey Hepburn ditches for Peter O'Toole (nothing against Eli, but can you blame her?) and Charles Boyer is also in the film as the director of a museum. Stanley Holloway played Audrey's dad, Alfie Doolittle, in the film version of 'My Fair Lady' and also created that role in the stage version opposite Julie Andrews, who created the role of Eliza.

129. All these Johns are action heroes. Which one is from "First Blood"?

From Quiz Characters Named John

Answer: John Rambo

John Rambo is a Vietnam veteran trained in guerrilla warfare. He is a former green beret who won the Medal of Honour for his service but he suffers some serious flashbacks to a communist prison camp where he was tortured during the war. A series of events in a hostile police station back home in America leads to him escaping into the nearby woods with the authorities attempting to recapture him. The character was first played by Sylvester Stallone in "First Blood" in 1982. Its huge success led to many sequels: "Rambo: First Blood Part II" in 1985, "Rambo III" in 1988 and "Rambo" in 2008. "Rambo V" is scheduled for 2009. John Clark is played by Willem Dafoe in "Clear and Present Danger". Robert Downey Jr. plays Special Agent John Royce in "U.S. Marshals". John Connor is from the "Terminator" movies and is played by different actors depending on his age.

130. The 1984 film "Amadeus" was directed by Milos Forman and garnered eight Oscars, however, the actress who played Mozart's wife, Constanze Mozart, did not get an Oscar. Which actress played the role of Constanze Mozart?

From Quiz Who Played the Wife?

Answer: Elizabeth Berridge

New York native Elizabeth Berridge played Mozart's wife in the movie. Prior to landing the role her only other significant credits were as Sheila Steward in "Natural Enemies" (1979) and as Amy Harper in the 1981 film "The Funhouse". She also appeared in the television series "Texas" as Allison Linden from 1980-1982. Elizabeth was well cast in the role of the elegant but frustrated wife of Mozart. Even though Mozart's genius was not grounded, she supported him when he chose to write music for the common people rather than the royalty, before his early death. Thomas Hulce was nominated for his role as Mozart but did not win Best Actor. Prior to that he had a role as one of the Delta House fraternity gang in 1979's "Animal House". Peggy Ashcroft took Oscar home for her role in "A Passage to India" released the same year. Lindsay Crouse earned a nomination for "Places in the Heart" and Patrizia von Brandenstein did win an Oscar for her work in "Amadeus" in the Best Art Direction-Set Decoration category. Interesting fact; Meg Tilly was originally cast for the role of Constanze but after beginning rehearsals she injured her leg playing soccer and had to cease production, giving Berridge the opportunity to play the role.

131. Elizabeth Short was an aspiring actress who came to Hollywood to jump start her career. However, Miss Short met her demise in one of the grisliest Hollywood murders in history. Who directed "The Black Dahlia", a 2006 film about this affair?

From Quiz Serial Killers Gone Celluloid: Part III

Answer: Brian De Palma

Brian De Palma was also renowned for directing "Carrie", "Scarface", and "The Untouchables". The music video for Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" was also something he directed.

132. The 1996 movie "Mars Attacks!" taught us one very important thing. Irritating music is death to big-brained aliens. Who sang the song which eventually saved mankind?

From Quiz How To Save the World from: Aliens

Answer: Slim Whitman

Slim Whitman was an American country music singer and songwriter who was a self taught left-handed guitarist. Gene Autry and Hank Williams are also country music artists, but Chumbawamba is an English band best known for their song "Tubthumping". "Mars Attacks!", on the other hand, featured an all-star cast with the likes of Jack Nicholson, Michael J. Fox, Pierce Brosnan, and those big-brained aliens launching an attack on Earth.

133. Who would've thought that a double burger, a woman named Skylar, M.I.T., apples and a song called "Miss Misery" would all come from the same film? Well they all do! Can you name the film I am talking about?

From Quiz Putting It All Together

Answer: Good Will Hunting

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck do double duty for this film. They both star in the film and wrote the Academy Award winning screenplay. Will (Damon) is a mathematical genius with an abusive past. He would rather spend his days working as a janitor at M.I.T, than working for some of the country's top companies. Will seems to be on a destructive path until two people change his life. The first is his therapist, Sean (Robin Williams), and the second is his girlfriend Skylar (Minnie Driver). With the help of these two people, Will tries to mend his destructive past and move forward with the present. --CLUES-- Double Burger: In one scene, Will, Chuckie, Morgan and Billy are all in the car after picking up some fast food. Morgan is obnoxiously asking for his double burger from the back seat. Skylar: Skylar is the name of Will's girlfriend, who ultimately flies to California to attend medical school. M.I.T.: The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is where Will is working as a janitor and it is where he meets Professor Lambeau. Apples: In one of the most famous scenes of this film, Clark, a man who was being very pompous and arrogant to Chuckie in the previous scene, is seen by Will in a coffee shop. Will walks up to Clark and asks Clark if he likes apples. Clark tells Will yes. Will slams a napkin on the window with Skylar's phone number on it and says "Well I got her number. How do you like them apples?" Miss Misery: "Miss Misery" is the Academy Award nominated original song from this film.

134. "Delicatessen" (1991) is an apocalyptic black comedy, set in a vague area of the world. The butcher shop always needs a handyman. An out-of work former clown applies for the job. What is his fate?

From Quiz Cult Films Part Trois

Answer: To be cannibalized

Handymen don't last too long in this meat-starved society. They seem to disappear and everyone eats better for a few days. The grim outcome is more suggested than seen. The tenants take a liking to the clown, not because he is a clown but because of his nature and helpfulness, even though they know his fate. The clown and a young wallflower have a tender romance and the film is laced with interesting characters.

135. Gold and madness suffused this 1948 film about three destitute prospectors seeking and finding riches in the Mexican desert. What was this classic, that saw a young John Huston direct both his father, Walter, and the inimitable Humphrey Bogart?

From Quiz A Guilden Movie Marathon

Answer: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

This enigmatic film, which saw Bogart's character succumb to the greed and paranoia characteristic of gold fever, following his and his companion's bountiful strike, was based on a novel by the equally enigmatic B. Traven. Very little is known about Traven, including his real name. He wrote in both German and English, and had a comprehensive command of Mexican culture; much of his work is often read as a polemic in favor of Mexican Indian rights. The most popular conjecture about his identity is that he was Hal Croves, a German émigré to Mexico who appeared as Traven's agent during the film's production. This is far from a consensus view, however. Our fearless leader stuthehistoryguy chose the first movie and caused a minor rebellion in the ranks as this was the choice of more than one member.

136. In "It Runs in the Family", the wife of one of the characters has diabetes. Four of the roles in this movie are actually played by members of the one acting family. Which one is it?

From Quiz Dubious Player or Deliberate Foil?

Answer: The Douglas family

Kirk Douglas plays Mitchell Blomberg and his wife Evelyn, played by Diana Douglas has diabetes. She is on dialysis as a result of the disease process. Four members of the Douglas family feature in this dynastic peek at family members, each struggling with their own identity and their role in the family. Michael Douglas plays Alex, who is very keen not to end up resembling his father, Mitchell. His son Cameron Douglas plays third generation Asher who is busy finding himself at college. His wife's diabetes points to Mitchell's own mortality as he seeks to reconcile with his son and grandson.

137. In which movie can we hear Peter Gabriel's song "In your eyes"?

From Quiz Teen Movies

Answer: Say Anything

Lloyd Dobler played by John Cusack makes love to Ione Skye's Diane Court while this song is playing on the car radio. I'm sure you remember Cusack holding an enormous beat box under Diane's window hoping to get her back. Classic!
