Movies: Something in Common Trivia Questions

91. Which actor plays a rock and roll knight who travels around with Chaucer in one movie and an ill-tempered outcast who is really just a nice guy at heart in another?

From Quiz
Nice Guys Finishing First

Answer: Heath Ledger

Heath Ledger stars in "A Knight's Tale". It tells the story of a commoner, William Thatcher, pretending to be a knight in Medieval Europe. Paul Bettany plays Geoffrey Chaucer who is his over-the-top herald. William is a nice guy who almost loses it all when it is found out he is a commoner but Prince Edward saves him. He wins the final joust and therefore the tournament and gets the girl, proving that nice guys can finish first. In "10 Things I Hate About You", Ledger plays Patrick Verona, an outcast who according to rumor just returned from jail. But the tough guy facade fades as the movie progresses and in the end his mercenary motives give way to true love. His true nature as that of a nice guy shows through and in the end he gets the girl.

92. Two New York "youts" are in legal troubles in a southern town and are forced to rely on an inept lawyer and his ditzy girlfriend to prove their innocence. Can you name this 1992 movie?

From Quiz The Silver Screen - "Southern-Style"

Answer: My Cousin Vinny

Can you think of a worse place to be in North America than an Alabama jailhouse? Vinny Gambini and Mona Lisa Vito, played by Joe Pesci and Marisa Tomei, set out to prove that Vinny's cousin Bill and Bill's friend Stan (the two "youths") are innocent of a murder charge. Fred Gwynne, of "Herman Munster" fame, plays the judge. Vinny's daily courtroom antics are initially frustrating, but he eventually manages to present an acceptable case as a lawyer.

93. When you find your Prince Charming, you become a Princess too. Thus was the real life of Grace Kelly who married Prince Rainier of Monaco. What was her last completed Hollywood film?

From Quiz The Last Picture Show, Part Two

Answer: High Society

In "High Society" (1956) Kelly was again paired with Bing Crosby. They had previously worked together on "The Country Girl" (1954(. "High Society" was a musical remake of "The Philadelphia Story" and also featured Frank Sinatra and Celeste Holm. Ironically, "The Swan" (1956) had Kelly cast as a Princess with Louis Jourdan and Alec Guinness. She made only eleven films but was paired with some of the best leading men in Hollywood including William Holden, Cary Grant, Ray Milland, James Stewart, and Clark Gable. Although she had invitations to return to the screen, Prince Rainier did not believe it was a proper image for a Princess. She died in an auto accident in 1982.

94. Moore, Roger Moore, took over the role of James Bond in 1973's "Live and Let Die." Before Moore took the role, another actor played Bond in 1969's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." Who was this double-oh one-timer?

From Quiz Moore, More, Moor

Answer: George Lazenby

Playing James Bond was George Lazenby's first major role. While he was offered a multi-film contract to play, Lazenby felt that the contract was too demanding and that he would have no problem getting other movie roles. In 1973, Lazenby signed a contract with the Hong Kong-based Golden Harvest studios to co-star with Bruce Lee in a series of films as Lee's "Western Adversary". Lazenby's planned comeback was not as big as he hoped after Lee died shortly after the contract was signed. Lazenby would play parodies of the "James Bond" character in the 1983 TV movie "The Return of the Man from U.N.C.L.E." and the episode "Diamonds Aren't Forever" of The New Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Ian Flemming had David Niven in mind for Bond, rather than Sean Connery. Flemming was quoted as saying, "I'm looking for Commander James Bond, not an overgrown stunt man". when he met Connery. Niven did play Bond in the parody "Casino Royale". Woody Allen was also in "Casino Royale" as Jimmy Bond. Timothy Dalton was offered the role in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", but turned it down because he felt he was too young to play the role.

95. Which handsome actor played the womanizing aerialist, Sebastian, in Cecile B.de Mille's movie, "The Greatest Show on Earth"?

From Quiz Handsome is as Handsome Does

Answer: Cornel Wilde

Cornel Wilde, of the dark brown twinkling eyes and robust physique, was born in Hungary. His family came to America when he was seven years old. Cornel Wilde, an intelligent and talented man, completed his undergraduate pre-med course in three years rather than the four generally required. He was offered a scholarship to study medicine at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, which he declined. He also relinquished his place on the U.S. Olympic Fencing Team. In 1940, he enrolled in New York's Irvine Studio to study acting. Sir Lawrence Olivier hired Cornel as his fencing teacher for his upcoming Broadway role in "Romeo and Juliet". From this teaching stint, Cornel obtained a small role in Olivier's play, from which Wilde's acting career blossomed. Playing the role of Sebastian in "The Greatest Show on Earth" was a highlight of his career.

96. In the 2003 live-action rendition of "Peter Pan", what final bit of magic is seen before the credits roll?

From Quiz The Last Enchantment

Answer: A streak of light disappearing into the starry night, as Peter Pan returns to Neverland.

"Where do you live?" "Second to the right, and then straight on till morning." How one gets to Neverland may be difficult for the average person. When Peter Pan takes Wendy and her brothers near the beginning of the film, we travel with them, but at the end of the movie, all you see is a streak of light ending in a flash deep in the nighttime sky. Jason Isaacs played the traditionally dual role of Captain Hook and Mr. Darling, while Jeremy Sumpter and Rachel Hurd-Wood played Peter Pan and Wendy Darling. This rendition of the classic story by J.M. Barrie had a decidedly more romantic feel to it than prior versions, in my opinion. As a trivial point of interest, the role of Michael Darling was filled by Freddie Popplewell; younger brother to Anna Popplewell, who played Susan Pevensie in the "Narnia" films.

97. Dorothy is rendered unconscious when hit on the head and dreams of a land with good and evil personified. During which film does Dorothy learn to believe that "there's no place like home"?

From Quiz Don't Dream It, Be It!

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

This film was not a huge success when released. In 1956 they began broadcasting the film annually and now, it is considered to be one of the best films ever made.

98. The Big 8 Motel in El Reno, Oklahoma, was used as a backdrop for scenes in which 1988 film that starred Dustin Hoffman and Valeria Golino? The film featured Dustin's character on the road with his brother.

From Quiz Movies Connected to Route 66

Answer: Rain Man

The Big 8 Motel has been demolished since the scene in "Rain Man". Built in the forties, the Big 8 was one of many hotels using neon lights to entice weary travelers to enjoy a relaxing night. "Rain Man" starred Tom Cruise as car dealer Charlie Babbitt, Dustin Hoffman as his brother, Raymond, and Valeria Golino as Charlie's girlfriend, Susanna. Because of his autism, Raymond was afraid of flying so the brothers shared a road trip after their father died. El Reno was home to Fort Reno, built in 1874 in honor of General Jesse L. Reno who was killed in the Civil War. "Private Conversations" was a 1986 documentary featuring Dustin Hoffman. Dustin starred as Vito McMullen in "Family Business" in 1989 and as Dutch Schultz in "Billy Bathgate" in 1991.

99. "Mrs. Doubtfire" (1993) starred Robin Williams, Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan. Who played the role of Uncle Frank Hillard, the make-up artist who transformed Daniel into Mrs. Doubtfire?

From Quiz Cross-Dressing in the Movies

Answer: Harvey Fierstein

Harvey Fierstein, an actor and a playwright, was born in 1952 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He wrote the book for "La Cage aux Folles" (1983) which won him a Tony Award for Best Book of a musical. Uncle Frank Hillard was played by Harvey Fierstein. Frank Hillard was Daniel's older brother and through his skills as a make up artist, he turned Daniel into Mrs. Doubtfire. Daniel (Robin Williams) and Miranda (Sally Field) had a bitter divorce, in which Miranda thought it would be best to stop Daniel from seeing the three children. With the help of both Frank and Jack, Daniel was transformed into Mrs. Euphegenia Doubtfire and was hired by Miranda to be a nanny to the three children. Daniel pulled off the masquerade with expertise because he was an expert at dubbing voices, so Miranda was unable to tell that Mrs. Doubtfire was actually Daniel. Over time, the children discovered the truth about Mrs. Doubtfire and so did Miranda, when they were all out to dinner along with Miranda's new boyfriend Stu Dunmeyer (Pierce Brosnan). Finally, Daniel was able to get a job dressed as Mrs. Doubtfire in a children's show. When this was discovered by Miranda, she went to Daniel and patched things up so he could be with the children again. Matthew Lawrence played the role of Chris Hillard, Daniel's and Miranda's son. Martin Mull played the role of Miranda's business partner. Scott Capurro played the role of "Aunt" Jack Hillard, who was Frank's partner and aided Frank in the task of turning Daniel into Mrs. Doubtfire.

100. Cole Sear discovers his school was once a legal courthouse after seeing a hanged man's ghost in which M. Night Shyamalan psychological thriller?

From Quiz Too Ghoul For School

Answer: The Sixth Sense

In "The Sixth Sense", young Cole is cursed with the ability to see and speak with dead people. Cole's teacher, explaining the rich history of Philadelphia, asks the class if anyone knows what their school used to be, to which Cole replies, "They used to hang people here," having previously seen the hanged man's ghost. His stunned teacher denies this assertion and tells us that it was a "legal courthouse." The movie is famous for its surprise ending. "I see dead people" is the chilling, immortal line uttered by Haley Joel Osment, who earned Best Supporting Actor Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his performance.

101. During a scene in "10 Things I Hate About You" (1999), Patrick (Heath Ledger) is more or less stalking Kat (Julia Stiles) in the bookstore. She finally runs into him and he asks her where a certain book is. What is the book?

From Quiz Books Found in Movies

Answer: The Feminine Mystique

Patrick is looking for this book because he said he "lost his copy", but it's really only so he can talk to Kat. All of these books were written by Betty Friedan, with "The Feminine Mystique" being the first one published in 1963.

102. The actor Jay Silverheels was best known for playing Tonto to Clayton Moore's Lone Ranger. He also portrayed which Apache leader at least twice on the big screen?

From Quiz The Silver Screen

Answer: Geronimo

Geronimo fought against Mexico and the USA before eventually surrendering. He was held in captivity, and became something of a celebrity, before dying from an accident at the age of 79. He was portrayed in many western films depicting the era and is one of the best known native Americans. Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull were Sioux leaders and Tecumseh was from the Shawnee tribe. Jay Silverheels was born on an Indian Reserve in Ontario, Canada, and was from the Mohawk tribe. He took various bit parts, in which he was usually credited just as 'Indian', under the name of Harry or Harold Smith. He adopted the name of 'Silverheels' which was his nickname from participation in sports. Silverheels played Geronimo (uncredited) in 'Broken Arrow' (1950), which starred James Stewart and again in 'Walk the Proud Land' (1956) with Audie Murphy. He played Tonto on television between 1949 and 1957, and in two cinema releases - 'The Lone Ranger' (1956) and 'The Lone Ranger and the Lost City of Gold' (1958).

103. In what movie did Christian Bale play the role of Patrick Bateman? In this film, we saw Patrick doing his daily workout regimen in his white cotton briefs.

From Quiz Are You a Briefs or Boxers Man?

Answer: American Psycho

This is the first film I had seen Christian in and I was impressed by his performance. He played the role of Patrick Bateman, a self absorbed spoiled brat. It is not totally clear to me if the murders were all in his head. In one scene in the film, Patrick thought he killed his rival, Paul Allen. We saw Paul sitting in a chair with his back to Patrick. Patrick was dressed in a plastic suit that covered his expensive suit. He snuck up behind the intoxicated Paul and killed him with an axe. In a later scene, it was revealed that Paul was away on business and was quite well. In the beginning of the film, we saw Patrick doing his daily workout in his white briefs. He was narrating to the audience the specific exercise and how many times he performed that exercise. He then went over his daily hygiene procedures. He described how he moisturized his skin and the specific products he used. He was definitely a narcissus. "American Psycho" was released in the year 2000. It was directed by Mary Harron, who also directed "I Shot Andy Warhol". The film starred Reese Witherspoon as Patrick's fiancee, Evelyn Williams.

104. "To Kill a Mockingbird"(1962), based on Harper Lee's classic novel, includes a tense courtroom scene with central character Atticus Finch defending a black man accused of rape. Who played Finch?

From Quiz Courtroom Dramas

Answer: Gregory Peck

When not crusading in the courtroom, Finch is the gentle father who teaches his children about prejudice and stereotypes. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning for Best Actor (Peck) Set Decoration, and Screen Play (Horton Foote). It was honored at the Cannes Film Festival (1963). The American Film Institute named Atticus Finch the greatest hero in films edging out Indiana Jones and James Bond.

105. The first buddy movie is 'Steel Magnolias' (1989). It was about southern belles. The movie starred Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Daryl Hannah and....Well, that's the question. Who was the other buddy in this film?

From Quiz Buddy Can You Spare An Answer

Answer: Olympia Dukakis

This movie was about friends who gathered at a beauty shop in Louisiana. It made you laugh and cry and some may have considered it a 'chick flick' but it was so well done that many men didn't mind admitting that they enjoyed the movie. Olympia Dukakis played Clairee Belcher, the wealthy widow of the former Mayor. Clairee was best friends with Ouiser Boudreaux (Shirley MacLaine). Dukakis worked mostly on TV until she appeared in 'Moonstruck', 'Working Girls' and 'Look Who's Talking' just prior to this movie. Julia Roberts was nominated for an Oscar and the movie won a People's Choice Award.

106. In 1967, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn starred in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". Katharine Houghton portrayed their daughter, Joanna. What relationship was Katharine Houghton to Katharine Hepburn in real life?

From Quiz Relatively Speaking

Answer: Niece

Katharine Houghton was actually Hepburn's niece. Hepburn portrayed Christina Drayton and Houghton played her daughter, nicknamed "Joey". Houghton appeared in ten films and over 60 Broadway productions. "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" was the ninth and final pairing of Hepburn and Tracy. Tracy passed away within a month of wrapping production. Katharine Hepburn had no children. Her grandniece is actress Schuyler Grant. Grant has had roles in "Anne of Green Gables" and "All My Children". Interesting fact; "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" featured Isabel Sanford as maid Matilda 'Tillie' Binks. She would later find television fame as Louise Jefferson.

107. In the 1993 comedy, "Hot Shots! Part Deux", Charlie Sheen's character compares the pain of a broken heart to the pain of passing the world's largest kidney stone. What is the name of Charlie Sheen's character in this movie?

From Quiz Movies for Weak Stomachs

Answer: Sean 'Topper' Harley

Topper Harley is coaxed out of retirement to rescue a team that was captured invading Saddam Hussein's palace. Sheen had to endure a strenuous training programme to get him into the type of shape needed to spoof a line of action heroes.

108. Sam Raimi ("Spider-Man") manages to sneak in several consistent 'signatures' in the films he directs, including cameos by "The Classic". What might "The Classic" be?

From Quiz Sneaky 'Signatures' and Tricky Trademarks

Answer: A car

While all of the listed choices are distinctive Raimi trademarks (and I'm sure Bruce Campbell would consider himself worthy of the title), "The Classic" is the nickname of Raimi's yellow(ish) 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88. It made its first appearance in 1981's low-budget (and cult favorite) "The Evil Dead", and Raimi has featured it in (according to Raimi himself) each of the 12 films he's directed since, up to and including 2009's "Drag Me to Hell". There was speculation that "The Classic" was not featured in 1995's "The Quick and the Dead", as the film was a western, but Bruce Campbell later revealed the chassis of the Olds 'starred' as the bottom half of a covered wagon. Bruce Campbell and Raimi have been friends since their high school days, and Campbell has either starred or made a cameo appearance in many of Raimi's films, including "The Evil Dead" and the "Spider-Man" franchises. "Maker's Mark" is the brand of Kentucky bourbon whiskey Raimi occasionally uses on his sets. Finally, Raimi is known for several signature camera techniques, one being a high speed camera shot from an object creating a 'first-person' effect from the objects viewpoint.

109. Burt Lancaster played a prisoner who developed a hobby concerning birds in the film "Birdman of Alcatraz". At what prison did the hobby begin?

From Quiz Prison Films

Answer: Leavenworth

The film was the "Birdman of Alcatraz". It was based on fact but was romanticized to some extent. Robert Stroud did keep birds and study birds at Leavenworth, but was not allowed to keep them when he was transferred to Alcatraz. Three actors received Academy Award nominations: Lancaster, Telly Savalas, and Thelma Ritter, but none won. It also had a cinematography nomination.

110. In "Some Like It Hot" what names do musicians Joe and Jerry use when pretending to be women?

From Quiz Out Comes A Man From Mars

Answer: Josephine and Daphne

Joe and Jerry witness a murder committed by gangster, Spats Columbo. They are spotted and decide to leave town. The two disguise themselves as women, using the names Josephine and Daphne so they can play in an all girl musical group. They spent the next fifteen years in prison trying to prove their innocence. Boris Karloff was born William Henry Pratt in London, 1887. 113. Two films based on "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas, pere, were made in 1973 and 1993. Which two actors played the part of Athos in the respective films?

From Quiz Three's a Crowd!

Answer: Oliver Reed and Kiefer Sutherland

This famous story by Dumas is set in Seventeenth Century France and is about the young recruit, D'Artagnan, trying to become a full musketeer by impressing Athos, Aramis and Porthos (the eponymous musketeers) whose motto is "All for one, and one for all". The original story was first published in serial form in a magazine called "Le Siecle" between March and July 1844. There have been many other films made based on this popular story and I am sure there will be more in the future. Oliver Reed is the nephew of director Carol Reed. Untrained as an actor, he had a huge physical presence on and off screen. From early roles in such films as "Curse of the Werewolf" (1961) through Bill Sykes in "Oliver", "Women in Love" and "Triple Echo", right up until his final role in "Gladiator" (1999) he always emanated danger. Due to his sad death during this final role some of it had to be completed with the use of a double and some outtakes. Kiefer Sutherland is the son of film star Donald. He has a long list of film credits but is probably best-known for the TV series "24", which ran from 2001 until 2010.

From Quiz Ten Famous Aliens

Answer: E.T.

"E.T., the Extra-terrestrial", was one of the most beloved movies of all time. E.T.'s voice was recorded primarily by Pat Welsh, who passed away in 1995. Since Elliot found E.T., E.T. was psychically, and even physically connected to Elliot. One of the things that happened when we saw this was when E.T. got "homesick", Elliot got ill as well. In the end of this movie, ET was finally rescued by his people after he successfully "phoned home".

115. "M" (1931) traces the pursuit of a pedophile/murderer. It introduced to the screen an Austrian actor who was forever type cast as a sneaky, shadowy, sinister villain. Who was he?

From Quiz Suspense Films

Answer: Peter Lorre

Lorre was noted as a comic actor before landing the role in "M". In the film he is often photographed in shadows so as to add mystery to his identity. Among Lorre's notable films are the 1930s "Mr. Moto" detective series, "Casablanca" (1942), and "The Maltese Falcon" (1941). In several later films he was often seen as a parody of himself, such as "Arsenic and Old Lace" (1954) and "Muscle Beach Party" (1964).

116. One of the earliest movies with a Christian inspiration was released in 1912 or 1913 (sources differ). Its title is "From the ______ to the Cross". What is the missing word?

From Quiz Christians Allowed

Answer: Manger

This movie, directed by Sidney Olcott, retells the life of Christ - starting with the annunciation to the Virgin Mary. The main part is, of course, the life of the adult Jesus, up to the crucifixion and resurrection. The storyboard follows the gospels. Robert Henderson-Bland stars as the adult Jesus, and Gene Gauntier plays the role of Mary. "Luke" 2:7 gives us the exact word we're looking for: after Mary had given birth to Jesus, "She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." The other options are figments of my imagination.

From Quiz Yours Truly, Your Imaginary Friend

Answer: A Beautiful Mind

Based on the life of Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr. (played by Russell Crowe), "A Beautiful Mind" took home four Academy Awards including 'Best Picture' and 'Best Director' (for Ron Howard). During the course of the film, Nash discovers and must come to terms with his schizophrenia, embodied in the visions of his supposed college roommate, niece, and a government agent who asks him to spy on the Soviets. It isn't until he realizes that the niece doesn't age that he fights to put his problem behind him. The film was based on the "A Beautiful Mind" book by Sylvia Nasar. It grossed over $300,000,000 in the box office and also took home a Golden Globe Award.

118. In this 1999 film starring Keanu Reeves, phone calls were important for characters to 'jack in' and 'jack out'. What movie is this?

From Quiz This is a Call

Answer: The Matrix

Heavy on the technology allusions, "The Matrix" made use of numerous phones in its filming whether for communication or travel between 'the matrix' itself or the real world of Zion. With an operator on the Zion end, Neo, Trinity, and others could jack in and jack out at appropriate times to enter the computerized world we live in. Killing someone in the matrix, unfortunately, kills them in Zion though, and while the characters are essentially avatars of their real selves, they can come to harm in both planes. This motif of the movie is seen in all three "Matrix" films and the original movie ends with Neo speaking on the phone. "The Matrix", starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Laurence Fishburne, was directed by the Wachowski Brothers, earning over $450,000,000 after its 1999 release. The series has since grossed over $1.6 billion and become immersed into popular culture.
